Relevance of Specific versus General Combining Ability in Winter Wheat

Crop Science, 2012
ABSTRACTKnowledge of quantitative genetic parameters is crucial in allocating resources for different steps of multistage selection programs. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the magnitude of variance of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects and their interaction with environments in ...

ESTIMATION OF GENERAL AND SPECIFIC COMBINING ABILITIES IN POTATO

Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1976
Seven quantitative traits of the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) were studied in a partial diallel cross experiment. Large specific combining ability effects were observed for total and marketable yields, total number of tubers, and number of marketable tubers. Large general combining ability effects were obtained for average weight per tuber,

General and specific combining abilities for different economic traits in broiler chickens

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1975
A complete diallel cross of four broiler breeds was made to investigate whether there are breed differences in the combining abilities for the traits, body weight, weight gain and feed efficiency, measured during the growing period from 4 to 12 weeks of age. Data collected from male and female birds were analysed separately.

GENERAL AND SPECIFIC COMBINING ABILITY IN SEVEN INBRED STRAWBERRY LINES

Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1968
Seedlings of a diallel cross of seven strawberry inbreds omitting reciprocals were fruited in matted rows. Per acre fruit yields were comparable with leading cultivars, but berry appearance and quality of the hybrids were poor. Differences in resistance to powdery mildew reflected the values of the cultivars from which the inbreds were derived. All ...

Miscellanea. Optimal designs for diallel crosses with specific combining abilities

Biometrika, 1999
SUMMARY Optimal designs for diallel crosses are considered when, in addition to the block effects and general combining abilities, the model also includes specific combining abilities. It is seen that partially balanced incomplete block designs with the triangular association scheme play a key role in this context.

General and Specific Combining Abilities for Flower Characters of Capsicum annuum L.

Journal of Experimental Agriculture International, 2019
The study was carried out with the objective of estimating the combinatorial capacity of ornamental pepper (Capsicum. annuum L.) genotypes for flower traits, aiming to identify the best hybrids and the best parents for the synthesis of new populations.

Multiplicative Models for Specific Combining Ability in Half‐diallels with Parents

Crop Science, 2013
ABSTRACTThis paper considers multiplicative models for the analysis of half‐diallels with parents (self‐crosses) and graphical displays based on such models, including biplots. It is shown that models respecting the symmetry of the diallel two‐way classification are inherently restrictive because multiplicative terms for specific combining ability (SCA)

Determination of General and Specific Combining Abilities in Some Oriental Tobacco Varieties

2016
General combining ability of parents and specific combining ability of crosses for yield and oil related traits in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Journal of Oilseeds Research, 2019
Twenty four hybrids along with ten parents and four standard checks were evaluated in a Randomized block design with two replications at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal during rabi, 2018-19. The analysis exhibited significant differences among lines for ten traits and testers for nine traits.

General vs. Specific Combining Ability in Single Crosses of Corn1

Agronomy Journal, 1942
Abstract: A method is presented for evaluating the relative importance of genes contributing to general and specific combining ability in the yield of single crosses of corn. In single crosses involving previously tested lines, genes conditioning specific combining ability have the most effect in determining yield differences.
