Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Geranium sylvaticum*

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
Geranium sylvaticum is a perennial forb of upland grasslands, woodlands and riverbanks in northern Britain, with scattered native occurrences also in Wales, central England and Northern Ireland. It has an extensive native range in Europe and Asia. The species is gynodioecious, with individual plants typically female or hermaphrodite.

Mixed effects of drought on species‐level traits and plant composition in the United States mixed‐grass prairie

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
Plant communities in two working rangeland mixed‐grass prairies were tolerant of implemented drought. However, plant functional traits within individual species shifted towards those that indicate drought avoidance and tolerance when rainfall was limited. One site and three traits shown for brevity. To understand how ecosystems like mixed‐grass prairie

Contrasting drought responses in two grassland plant–microbe systems under climate change

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
By contrasting two plant strategies across a soil‐moisture gradient under warming and elevated CO2, this study shows how drought and climate jointly shape plant performance and associated microbiomes. The stress‐tolerant Festuca rubra responds through trait plasticity and flexible bacterial communities, whereas the competitive Lolium perenne relies ...

Drought resistance drives population temporal stability of annuals in drylands

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
We examined how functional traits determine population temporal stability in 178 populations of winter annuals across Mediterranean, semi‐arid and arid climates over 13 years. Traits conferring higher drought resistance were consistently associated with greater stability in open habitats, whereas shrub microhabitats altered or reversed this pattern ...

Communities with diverse subsistence needs require a variety of functional tree traits

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 2, February 2026.
Malagasy forest users vary the traits that they prefer for different household uses. Accessibility is prioritized for daily uses such as fuelwood, while functional traits are valued for longer‐term uses. Differences between men and women reflect traditional gender roles.
