Specific mechanical energy – An essential parameter in the processing of amorphous solid dispersions
Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, 2021Specific mechanical energy (SME) is a frequently overlooked but essential parameter of hot-melt extrusion (HME). It can determine whether an amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) can be successfully processed. A minimum combination of thermal input and SME is required to convert a crystalline active pharmaceutical product (API) into its amorphous form.

Determination of Specific Mechanical Energy Distribution on a Twin-Screw Extruder
Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research, 1997The distribution of specific mechanical energy (SME) dissipated inside a co-rotating, self-wiping, twin-screw extruder was estimated by conducting energy balances on each zone of the extruder. SME dissipation was studied under three different steady state conditions in which the zone before the die was kept adiabatic or under constant cooling or under ...

Geomechanical parameter estimation from mechanical specific energy using artificial intelligence
Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2019Abstract A comprehensive knowledge of geomechanical characteristics of the formations above a reservoir (cap rock, in particular) can prevent a large spectrum of problems during drilling operation. Furthermore, access to such information during drilling operation greatly contributes to proper adjustment of controllable parameters and enhanced rate of

Differential Specific Mechanical Energy as a Quality Parameter in Racing Alpine Skiing
Journal of Applied Biomechanics, 2008An important question in alpine skiing is how to determine characteristics of well-performed ski turns, an issue that has become more crucial with the arrival of new carving skis. This article introduces a new method for estimating the quality of skiing at each point of observation based on mechanical energy behavior that can be measured using ...

Modeling and Analyzing of Specific Mechanical Energy in Animal Feed Extrusion Process
Transactions of the ASABE, 2013Abstract. A new mathematical model was proposed to describe the specific mechanical energy (SME) in the animal feed extrusion process based on dimensional analysis methodology (DAM). The effects of feed moisture content (21.3% to 29.7%), screw speed (140 to 240 rpm), and extrusion temperature (133°C to 167°C) on SME were studied by response surface ...
