Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

A comparison of linear and non-linear strategies for energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2023
Energy Harvesting strategies coupled with the improvement of electronics and the progressive reduction of power requirements have been widely recognized as fundamental to enable self-powered (or autonomous) devices. Among all the potential energy sources,

Relaxation dynamics of multi-level tunneling systems

open access: yes, 1996
A quantum mechanical treatment of an asymmetric double-well potential (DWP) interacting with a heat bath is presented for circumstances where the contribution of higher vibrational levels to the relaxation dynamics cannot be excluded from consideration ...

Doppler cooling of a Coulomb crystal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We study theoretically Doppler laser-cooling of a cluster of 2-level atoms confined in a linear ion trap. Using several consecutive steps of averaging we derive, from the full quantum mechanical master equation, an equation for the total mechanical ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Ballistic Transport at Uniform Temperature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A paradigm for isothermal, mechanical rectification of stochastic fluctuations is introduced in this paper. The central idea is to transform energy injected by random perturbations into rigid-body rotational kinetic energy.

Identification of coronal heating events in 3D simulations

open access: yes, 2017
The solar coronal heating problem is an open question since 1939. One proposed model for the transport and release of mechanical energy generated in the sub-phorospheric layers and photosphere is the nanoflare model that incorporates Ohmic heating which ...

Irregular Oscillatory-Patterns in the Early-Time Region of Coherent Phonon Generation in Silicon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Coherent phonon (CP) generation in an undoped Si crystal is theoretically investigated to shed light on unexplored quantum-mechanical effects in the early-time region immediately after the irradiation of ultrashort laser pulse.

Specific Energy Based Characterization of Surface Integrity in Mechanical Machining

open access: yesProcedia Manufacturing, 2017
In mechanical machining operations, process mechanisms and machining efficiency can be characterized by the cutting tool geometry, process parameters and workpiece materials. These variables are vital parameters to evaluating the specific cutting energy demand as indication to sustainable manufacture. In today's manufacturing environment, where minimum

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
