The specification of ?specification?
Minds and Machines, 1995The notion of “specification” plays a key role in the developing science of computing. It is typically considered to be the keystone in the software development process. However, there is no single, generally agreed meaning of “specification” that bears close scrutiny.

Cell fate specification, a central problem in developmental biology, presents an intriguing challenge in the studies of neural development. How are certain cells in the embryonic ectoderm selected to be neuronal precursors? How do individual neuronal precursors and their progeny cells acquire their own identity?

Exposure based treatments in which patients are systematically confronted with their feared objects of situations are highly effective in the treatment of specific phobias and produce stable improvement both in reported fear and behavioral avoidance. Exposure in reality is more effective in most cases than exposure in sensu.

Mathematical Structures in Computer Science, 2003
This paper presents a simple and powerful diagrammatic framework for dealing with specifications in computer science. Following a classical line, we define diagrammatic specifications as a kind of generalised sketch. In addition, the specifications themselves are defined as the realisations of projective sketches.

A model of thrombin interaction with distinct substrates or ligands has been derived from the crystallographic studies of thrombin-inhibitors complexes, and buttressed by functional studies with mutant thrombins, thrombin proteolytic derivatives or antibodies against thrombin.

This paper tackles the accusation that applied ethics is no serious academic enterprise because it lacks theoretical bracing. It does so in two steps. In the first step I introduce and discuss a highly acclaimed method to guarantee stability in ethical theories: Henry Richardson’s specification. The discussion shows how seriously ethicists take the

Among the environmental problems identified as such today are some that already have a very long history. Pleistocene hunter-gatherers in Australia changed Australian ecosystems greatly, may have contributed to the extinction of some plant and animal species and caused significant pollution especially by their use of fire (Goudsblom 1992; Reijnders ...
