Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Optimal z-axis scanning parameters for gynecologic cytology specimens

open access: yesJournal of Pathology Informatics, 2013
The use of virtual microscopy (VM) in clinical cytology has been limited due to the inability to focus through three dimensional (3D) cell clusters with a single focal plane (2D images). Limited information exists regarding the optimal scanning parameters for 3D scanning. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal number of the focal plane ...

Specimen Orientation Optimization and Automated Fixture Generation for Computed Tomography

open access: yes, 2022
7 S.Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) is the only non-destructive measurement method to capture both inner and outer structures of a specimen, allowing to perform inspection tasks and dimensional measurements. Image artefacts decrease the quality of CT

Productivity‐Driven Optimization of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Parameters for IN718 Superalloy: Process Control, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates how optimizing laser power, scanning speed, and hatching distance in laser powder bed fusion can boost the productivity of Inconel 718 manufacturing by up to 29% while maintaining mechanical integrity. The work delivers a validated process window and cost–time analysis, offering industry‐ready guidelines for efficient additive ...

Shape optimization of cast parts with porous material

open access: yes, 2009
The effect of microscopic material inhomogeneities on the shape optimization of structural parts has been investigated. For the example of a flat, dog-bone shaped tensile test specimen it has been shown that material porosity has an influence on the ...

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Surrogate-Based Shape Optimization of a Cruciform Specimen for Biaxial Testing of Microparticle Reinforced Epoxy Adhesives

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Reliable determination of the in-plane biaxial mechanical behavior of particle-reinforced composite adhesives under multiaxial stress conditions requires cruciform specimen geometries that achieve high stress uniformity in the measurement zone.

A digitization workflow of dry-pinned collections of Lepidoptera [PDF]

open access: yesZooKeys
Butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) are one of the most commonly found insect groups in museum collections. Yet many specimens still lack digital data and few digitization workflows are available.
