Developing models to detect maize diseases using spectral vegetation indices derived from spectral signatures

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Remote Sensing and Space Sciences
Maize, a vital global crop, faces numerous challenges, including outbreaks. This study explores the use of spectral vegetation indices for the early detection of maize diseases in individual leaves based on crop phenology at the vegetative, tasselling ...

Nonlinear unmixing of minerals based on the log and continuum removal model

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Remote Sensing, 2019
Spectral mixing models for minerals can be complex, and choosing the right unmixing model is indispensable to ensure the accuracy of spectral unmixing. Continuum removal (CR) and natural log operation have the potential to eliminate nonlinear effects in ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Real-space spectral simulation of quantum spin models: Application to generalized Kitaev models

open access: yesSciPost Physics Core
The proliferation of quantum fluctuations and long-range entanglement presents an outstanding challenge for the numerical simulation of interacting spin systems with exotic ground states. Here, we present a toolset of Chebyshev polynomial-based iterative

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Spectral Ripples in Normal and Electric Hearing Models

open access: yesTechnologies
Devising a psychophysical test to assess spectral resolution has not been easy. Two tests that have been used previously are the spectral ripple test and the spectral-temporally modulated ripple test (SMRT).

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Spectral Models for Subsidy Allocation in Industrial Systems

open access: yesAppliedMath
This paper studies subsidy allocation in interconnected industrial systems using the spectral theory of positive matrices. The allocation is characterized by the Perron eigenvector of a cost matrix describing inter-factory interactions.
