Impact of Spectral Nudging on Real‐Time Tropical Cyclone Forecast

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2018
AbstractRegional models often face a chronic problem caused by inconsistencies between simulated model fields and large‐scale forcing data, which could limit predictability of regional models. Spectral nudging is a technique which can ameliorate this issue by providing large‐scale forcing in the regional model interior.

Effects of Spectral Nudging in WRF on Arctic Temperature and Precipitation Simulations

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2013
Abstract Spectral (interior) nudging is a way of constraining a model to be more consistent with observed behavior. However, such control over model behavior raises concerns over how much nudging may affect unforced variability and extremes.

Effects of Spectral Nudging on Oceanic States in a Coarse-Resolution Model

Atmosphere - Ocean, 2015
ABSTRACTA 1-degree global model is used to investigate the skill of spectral nudging at coarse resolution by performing two numerical experiments, one with spectral nudging and the other without. In the spectral nudging experiment, the model temperature and salinity are nudged to an observed climatological monthly-mean field.

Simulation of Mixed Layer Depth in the Northeast Pacific Utilizing Spectral Nudging

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2011
Abstract A numerical model, the Parallel Ocean Program (POP), is used to run a 46-yr simulation of the North Pacific Ocean beginning in January 1960. The model has 0.25° horizontal resolution and 28 vertical levels, and it employs spectral nudging, which, unlike standard nudging, nudges only specific frequency and wavenumber bands.

Representation of Arabian Peninsula summer climate in a regional atmospheric model using spectral nudging

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Climatology, 2021
This study assesses the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in simulating the Arabian Peninsula summer climate for the period 2001–2016. The European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) reanalysis is downscaled using WRF without (CTRL) and with the Spectral Nudging (SPN) method.

Effects of spectral nudging on the 2010 East Asia summer monsoon using WRF model

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2012
The performance of spectral nudging in an investigation of the 2010 East Asia summer monsoon was assessed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, forced by 1-degree NCEP Global Final Analysis (FNL). Two pairs of experiments were made, spectral nudging (SP) and non-spectral nudging (NOSP), with five members in each group.

Impact of intermittent spectral nudging on regional climate simulation using Weather Research and Forecasting model

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 2011
This study examines simulated typhoon sensitivities to spectral nudging (SN) to investigate the effects on values added by regional climate models, which are not properly resolved by low-resolution global models.
