Effects of Spectral Nudging in WRF on Arctic Temperature and Precipitation Simulations
Journal of Climate, 2013Abstract Spectral (interior) nudging is a way of constraining a model to be more consistent with observed behavior. However, such control over model behavior raises concerns over how much nudging may affect unforced variability and extremes.

Simulation of Mixed Layer Depth in the Northeast Pacific Utilizing Spectral Nudging
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2011Abstract A numerical model, the Parallel Ocean Program (POP), is used to run a 46-yr simulation of the North Pacific Ocean beginning in January 1960. The model has 0.25° horizontal resolution and 28 vertical levels, and it employs spectral nudging, which, unlike standard nudging, nudges only specific frequency and wavenumber bands.

Effects of Spectral Nudging on Oceanic States in a Coarse-Resolution Model
Atmosphere-Ocean, 2015ABSTRACTA 1-degree global model is used to investigate the skill of spectral nudging at coarse resolution by performing two numerical experiments, one with spectral nudging and the other without. In the spectral nudging experiment, the model temperature and salinity are nudged to an observed climatological monthly-mean field.

Effects of spectral nudging on the 2010 East Asia summer monsoon using WRF model
Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2012The performance of spectral nudging in an investigation of the 2010 East Asia summer monsoon was assessed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, forced by 1-degree NCEP Global Final Analysis (FNL). Two pairs of experiments were made, spectral nudging (SP) and non-spectral nudging (NOSP), with five members in each group.

Impacts of the spectral nudging technique on simulation of the East Asian summer monsoon
Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 2009This study assesses the performance of spectral nudging methodology in dynamical regional climate downscaling for summer climate over East Asia. The regional climate model NCAR-MM5v3 was used to dynamically downscale the 2.5-degree NCEP/NCAR reanalysis (NNRP) data onto 50-km regional grids. The main focus is the model’s simulation of precipitation. The

Impact of spectral nudging on regional climate simulation over CORDEX East Asia using WRF
Climate Dynamics, 2016In this study, the impact of the spectral nudging method on regional climate simulation over the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment East Asia (CORDEX-EA) region is investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). Driven by the ERA-Interim reanalysis, five continuous simulations covering 1989–2007 are conducted by ...

Impact of spectral nudging on the downscaling of tropical cyclones in regional climate simulations
Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 2016This study investigated the simulations of three months of seasonal tropical cyclone (TC) activity over the western North Pacific using the Advanced Research WRF Model. In the control experiment (CTL), the TC frequency was considerably overestimated. Additionally, the tracks of some TCs tended to have larger radii of curvature and were shifted eastward.

Climate storylines using the spectral nudged simulations with IFS-FESOM
We are presenting our efforts to incorporate spectral nudging capabilities into the development and assessment of model-driven storyline scenarios using a km-scale coupled climate model. Working within the framework of the EU’s Destination Earth project, we are working towards this objective by employing the ocean sea-ice model FESOM coupled ...Amal John +5 more

Sensitivity of a Spectrally Filtered and Nudged Limited-Area Model to Outer Model Options
Monthly Weather Review, 1996Abstract Numerical filters required to control spatial computational modes in a limited-area model (LAM) that uses the unstaggered. A grid are developed and tested over the complex topography of the Great Basin of the western United States. The filters are founded upon Fourier expansions of forecast deviation fields and function equally effectively for

Attribution of European Heatwaves to Global Warming Using Spectrally Nudged Storylines
This study employs Spectrally Nudged Storylines to attribute heatwaves to anthropogenic global warming. Utilizing high-resolution global (ECHAM) and regional (CCLM) climate models, we aim to discern the influence of anthropogenic climate change on the characteristics of European heatwaves observed in the last decade.Dalena Leon +2 more
