Spectroscopic binary stars and the CHARA array

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
Georgia State University's Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) operates a multi-telescope, long-baseline, optical/infrared interferometric array on Mt. Wilson, California. Since its inception, one of the primary scientific goals for the CHARA Array has been the resolution of spectroscopic binary stars, which offer tremendous potential ...

Study of physical properties of spectroscopic binary stars

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1982
The main results of a study of a catalogue of physical parameters of 1041 spectroscopic binaries are presented. The distribution of spectroscopic binaries over all main parametersM1, a, e, M1/M2, P, and certain dependencies between some of them have been found.

Mass distribution of young spectroscopic binary stars

PHYSICS OF SPACE : Proceedings of the 51-st All-Russian with international participation student scientific conference
The mass distribution of the components is constructed and approximated by the power- law dN " M-rd lg M using the observation data about 57 pre-main sequence doubl^lined spectroscopic binaries. For stars with mass 1.0Mq г = 1.49±0.47, this is close to the Salpeter mass function. In the mass range 0.1M© г = -(0.92 ± 0.87).

The mass-ratio distribution of spectroscopic binary stars

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1992
In order to determine the mass-ratio distribution of spectroscopic binary stars, the selection effects that govern the observations of this class of binary systems are investigated. The selection effects are modelled numerically and analytically. The results of the models are compared to the data inThe Eighth Catalogue of the Orbital Elements of ...

On the reflection effect in spectroscopic binary stars

Vistas in Astronomy, 1970
Abstract It is shown that both spectroscopic observations and observations of reddening during eclipses of close binary stars indicate the existence of “hot spot” conditions over an area of a “reflecting” star that cannot be explained by a simple geometrical model of reflection.

Statistics of binary stars. I - Multivariate analysis of spectroscopic binaries

1983
By multivariate statistical analysis the authors point out correlations among physical parameters of spectroscopic binary systems. The best clustering has been outlined allowing a direct interpretation in terms of H.R. diagram in the maximum variance plane. Cluster analysis confirms the probable period-eccentricity relation.
