Functional Connectivity Linked to Cognitive Recovery After Minor Stroke

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Patients with minor stroke exhibit slowed processing speed and generalized alterations in functional connectivity involving frontoparietal cortex (FPC). The pattern of connectivity evolves over time. In this study, we examine the relationship of functional connectivity patterns to cognitive performance, to determine ...

Bayesian Estimation Improves Prediction of Outcomes After Epilepsy Surgery

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We estimated the statistical power of studies predicting seizure freedom after epilepsy surgery. We extracted data from a Cochrane meta‐analysis. The median power across all studies was 14%. Studies with a median sample size or less (n ≤ 56) and a statistically significant result exaggerated the true effect size by a factor of 5.4, while the ...

Interactive Multimedia Association-Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation Codec With Gated Recurrent Unit Predictor

open access: yesIEEE Access
Speech coding is important for effective storage and transmission of audio signals. However, current Interactive Multimedia Association Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (IMA-ADPCM) speech coding techniques that use a fixed predictor have an ...

Remote Assessment of Ataxia Severity in SCA3 Across Multiple Centers and Time Points

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a genetically defined ataxia. The Scale for Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) is a clinician‐reported outcome that measures ataxia severity at a single time point. In its standard application, SARA fails to capture short‐term fluctuations, limiting its sensitivity in trials.

Rate–Distortion–Perception Optimized Neural Speech Transmission System for High-Fidelity Semantic Communications

open access: yesSensors
We consider the problem of learned speech transmission. Existing methods have exploited joint source–channel coding (JSCC) to encode speech directly to transmitted symbols to improve the robustness over noisy channels.

The Efficient Coding of Speech: Cross-Linguistic Differences.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Neural coding in the auditory system has been shown to obey the principle of efficient neural coding. The statistical properties of speech appear to be particularly well matched to the auditory neural code.

Lived and Care Experiences of Chronic Musculoskeletal Shoulder Pain in Australian Adults: A Qualitative Study

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Australian evidence on lived and care experiences of chronic musculoskeletal shoulder pain (CMSP), irrespective of disorder classification or disease, is limited. However, such evidence is important for person‐centered care and informing local service pathways and care guidelines or standards.

FORWARD MASKING THRESHOLD ESTIMATION USING NEURAL NETWORKS AND ITS APPLICATION TO PARALLEL SPEECH ENHANCEMENT

open access: yesInternational Islamic University Malaysia Engineering Journal, 2010
Forward masking models have been used successfully in speech enhancement and audio coding. Presently, forward masking thresholds are estimated using simplified masking models which have been used for audio coding and speech enhancement applications.

Heterogeneity of Rheumatoid Arthritis–Associated Interstitial Lung Disease by Longitudinal Forced Vital Capacity Trajectory and Associations With Disease Outcomes

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We aimed to identify unique disease trajectories within rheumatoid arthritis–associated interstitial lung disease (RA‐ILD) based on longitudinal forced vital capacity (FVC) values and their associated clinical outcomes. Methods We performed a cohort study of RA‐ILD within the Veterans Health Administration from 1999 to 2021.
