A speech coding system operated under a known code-excited linear prediction (CELP) coding method. The CELP coding is achieved by selecting an optimum pitch vector P from an adaptive codebook and the corresponding first gain and, at the same time, selecting an optimum code vector from a sparse-stochastic codebook and the corresponding second gain.

In existing speech coding systems, all quantizer codebooks are designed to suit the statistical and perceptual characteristics of speech signals of a population of speakers. However, an individual's speech signal does not exhibit, even over a long time, the entire range of characteristics of the population. With the advent of the personal communication

The purpose of this paper is to address the question of whether computer source code is speech protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution or whether it is merely functional, a "machine," designed to fulfill a set task and therefore bereft of protection. The answer to this question is a complex one.

A speech signal coding system comprises a prediction filter coupled with an output of a quantizer for prediction of a signal. A subtractor provides the difference between an input signal and an output of the prediction filter. A quantizer quantizes the residual signal, which is the difference provided by the subtractor.

A speech coding apparatus which selects an optimum code from a code book (21), the optimum code giving the minimum magnitude of error signal between the input signal and the reproduced signal obtained by a filter calculation using a linear prediction parameter from a linear predictive analysis unit (10) with respect to the codes of the code data ...

The invention relates to a method for processing the parameters of a speech coder according to the quality of the transmission connection. The quality of the transmission connection is determined in a quality monitoring member (409) on the basis of erroneous/error-free classifications of single received frames so that for determining the quality of the
