Most speech disorders of childhood are treated with speech therapy. However, two conditions, ankyloglossia and velopharyngeal dysfunction, may be amenable to surgical intervention. It is important for surgeons to work with experienced speech language pathologists to diagnose the speech disorder.

Summary The objective of this presentation has not been to answer all questions concerning disorders of speech in childhood but rather to orient the pediatrician to the subject. It is hoped that this orientation will provide the interest and motivation for further investigations by the pediatrician into the area of communication disorders.
