Intelligibility Measures of Dysarthric Speech

Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1964
Ten dysarthric and 10 matched normal speakers recorded three word lists (50 CNC’s, 60 Clusters, and 50 Spondees). Intelligibility scores were obtained for lists, order of presentation, list by order of presentation, and lists and order of presentation combined.

Interrelations of Speech and Intelligence

American Journal of Sociology, 1929
Both the methods of intelligence testing and classroom experiences indicate that "intelligence," as the word is used in education, refers to abilities identical or highly correlated with speech functions. Experience provides two signs of this correlation in a quantitative sense-differing abilities in storing up words for use and differing abilities in ...

Measurement of Intelligibility in Disordered Speech

Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 2006
Purpose To determine empirically which of three frequently observed rules in children with phonological disorders contributes most to difficulties in speaker intelligibility. Method To evaluate the relative effects on intelligibility of deletion of final consonants (DFC), stopping ...

The intelligibility of speech with “holes'’ in the spectrum

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2002
The intelligibility of speech having either a single “hole” in various bands or having two “holes” in disjoint or adjacent bands in the spectrum was assessed with normal-hearing listeners. In experiment 1, the effect of spectral “holes” on vowel and consonant recognition was evaluated using speech processed through six frequency bands, and synthesized ...

Interaural alternation and speech intelligibility

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1974
The intelligibility of interaurally alternated speech was measured by two methods: shadowing and subjective estimation. A passage of connected discourse was recorded at two speaking rates, normal (135 wpm) and fast (194 wpm). Shadowing scores and estimations of intelligibility for normal-rate speech were nearly 100% at eight rates of alternation ...

Vowels and speech intelligibility

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
Recent research on the contribution of vowel versus consonant segments to sentence intelligibility has demonstrated a 2:1 advantage for vowels in a noise replacement paradigm [Kewley-Port et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. (in press)]. The vowel advantage is sustained when boundaries are slightly modified in sentences, but different results have been reported

Disorders of Speech Intelligibility

Journal of Childhool Communication Disorders, 1983
Variables affecting intelligibility include intensity, frequency, vocal quality rate, articulation, language, prosody, and foreign accent. Unintelligible speakers, both children and adults, may exhibit problems with some or all of these variables. Assessment and remediation of intelligibility in children has revolved around assessment of articulation ...

Speech Intelligibility and HRTF

2019
This chapter describes the effects of the HRTF on speech intelligibility. An HRTF causes an interaural phase difference. Under the presence of a masker, the threshold of the target sound is affected by the relationship in the interaural phase difference between the target sound and the masker.

Intelligibility of Reiterated Speech

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1959
An attempt is made to increase the intelligibility of speech sampled in time (interrupted speech) by filling in the blank spaces with repetitions of the speech samples (reiterated speech). The experiment involves the evaluation of these processes of speech distortion in quiet and in noise with two duty cycles (speech-time fractions), with various rates
