Processing unattended speech

Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2006
Three experiments examine the effect of a difference in fundamental frequency (F0) range between two simultaneous voices on the processing of unattended speech. Previous experiments have only found evidence for the processing of nominally unattended speech when it has consisted of isolated words which could have attracted the listener’s attention.

Speech processing in radiology

European Radiology, 1999
The goal of this study was to evaluate the recognition rate, learning potential and amount of time needed to complete a report with the Philips speech recognition system SP 6000 (Philips, Best, The Netherlands). Four radiologists dictated reports of interventional radiology, MRI examinations of the musculoskeletal system and CT examinations of the ...

RASTA processing of speech

IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing, 1994
Performance of even the best current stochastic recognizers severely degrades in an unexpected communications environment. In some cases, the environmental effect can be modeled by a set of simple transformations and, in particular, by convolution with an environmental impulse response and the addition of some environmental noise.

Speech Processing at BBN

IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, 2006
This survey of speech processing activities covers a period that began around 1971. Areas of importance - technical as well as historical - include speech recognition and understanding, speech coding, speaker recognition, and speech modification. A number of today's best-regarded techniques in speech and language processing stem from BBN's early work.

Audiovisual speech processing

IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, 2001
We have reported activities in audiovisual speech processing, with emphasis on lip reading and lip synchronization. These research results have shown that, with lip reading, it is possible to enhance the reliability of audio speech recognition, which may result in a computer that can truly understand the user via hand-free natural spoken language even ...

Auditory Processing of Speech

Language and Speech, 1980
We believe in our group that the only way to describe human speech is to describe not the perception itself but the artificial speech understanding system that is most compatible with the experimental data obtained in speech perception research. For this purpose a multichannel model comprising the cochlea has been built as an analog system.

Speech processing for artificial tactile speech displays

ICASSP '83. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1983
Two methods of encoding speech for tactile displays were compared in experiments which measured the discriminability of tactile representations of short speech segments. One display represented the short-term speech spectrum in time-swept mode and used vibration amplitude to encode spectral amplitude.

Method for processing speech signal in speech processing system

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998
A method for processing an input speech signal to be applied to a CELP vocoder has the steps of obtaining preliminary pitch search intervals by a preprocessing autocorrelation expression from a pitch lag of a synthesized speech signal which is synthesized from a residual signal of the input speech signal; computing coefficients of pitch filter with ...

Speech as Process

Foreign Language Annals, 1987
ABSTRACT  The emphasis on assessment of oral proficiency that is inherent in the proficiency movement has favored a view of speech as a product, to which a certain rating is attached. However, with proficiency's growing impact on language learning and teaching it is imperative that proficiency testing take a stronger learner stance.

The auditory processing and recognition of speech

Proceedings of the workshop on Speech and Natural Language - HLT '89, 1989
We are carrying out investigations into the application of biophysical and computational models to speech processing. Described here are studies of the robustness of a speech representation using a biophysical model of the cochlea; experimental results on the representation of speech and complex sounds in the mammalian auditory cortex; and descriptions
