Speech production measured of speech perception: replications and extensions
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1977In the early 1960's, Chistovitch and her colleagues used rapid shadowing (vocal reaction time) and manual reaction time to explore the perceptual processing of speech. Two ingriguing aspects of their data were the relatively fast vocal reaction times and the subjects' tendency to begin articulatory responses before all of the acoustic cues for ...

Speech-production measures of speech perception: Rapid shadowing of VCV syllables
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1980Five listeners rapidly repeated (’’shadowed’’) a random presentation of the vowel–consonant–vowels (VCV’s) /aba, apa, ama, aka, aga/. Initial vowel duration was varied to eliminate it as a temporal cue to the occurrence of the consonant. These shadowing, choice reaction times (RT’s) were compared to simple RT’s obtained when listeners always produced ...

It appears that temperature instabilities are a major obstacle hindering the use of semiconductor strain gauge pressure transducers in speech research, especially when absolute pressure data are mandatory. In this paper a simple and reliable method for an in vivo calibration of this kind of transducer is described.

PurposeA speech-specific reinvestment scale (SSRS) is a psychometric measure of the propensity to consciously control and monitor speech production. This study develops and validates an SSRS as well as examines its relationship with speech performance with the moderating effects of trait social anxieties (i.e., social interaction anxiety, public ...

Optoelectronic measurement of orofacial motions during speech production
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1993Optoelectronic position sensing devices have been important in the study of speech articulation. While limited to the kinematics of externally visible structures such as the lips and the jaw, such systems can be used easily with a wide range of subjects.

Influences of pellet markers on speech production behavior: Acoustical and perceptual measures
Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1999Peri- and intraoral devices are often used to obtain measurements concerning articulator motions and placements. Surprisingly, there are few formal evaluations of the potential influence of these devices on speech production behavior. In particular, the potential effects of lingual pellets or coils used in x-ray or electromagnetic studies of tongue ...
