Reliability and the Marine Spey

Throughout its development the Spey marine propulsion unit has been the subject of a thorough reliability assurance programme in partnership with the Royal Navy. This paper describes the philosophy adopted, the techniques used and discusses the sort of results generated and the wider benefits now becoming apparent of a disciplined approach.

Marine Spey—SM1A Propulsion Module

The requirements for a high efficiency marine gas turbine of 10 to 12 MW output has been identified, particularly for Naval craft. The adaptation and development of a marine version of the Rolls-Royce Spey aero engine has been funded by the Ministry of Defence to meet this requirement.

Abstract Before 1804 travellers crossed the river Spey at Fochabers by ferry. This could be a hazardous operation when the river was in spate or covered with floating pack-ice.
