Spelling checkers, spelling correctors and the misspellings of poor spellers
Information Processing & Management, 1987A large corpus of spelling errors taken from free writing is analyzed to assess how great a challenge such errors present for automatic checking and correction. The analysis reveals a high proportion of errors that match dictionary words; these would necessitate the use of context in error detection.

Adaptive Spell Checker for Dyslexic Writers
2008Dyslexic writers make more spelling errors than non-dyslexic writers do. There is some disagreement as to whether they display distinct characteristics in their spelling errors or whether they make errors typical of a younger age group while trying to use vocabulary that is of a level similar to that of others their own age.

Lookup: interactive spell checker for single words
Online Review, 1991Lookup checks spelling of individual words while the user types documents using any of several different wordprocessing packages. The package is easy to install and use. Lookup runs on Macintosh computers. This review was done on a Mac Plus computer with 2.5 megabytes (Mb) of memory and a 60 Mb hard disk.
