Traversing the land‐sea interface: A climate change risk assessment of terrestrially breeding marine predators

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 8, August 2024.
We developed a framework to assess climate change risk for 56 seabird and seal species breeding in Australian territories and Antarctica. Extreme weather, changes in habitat suitability, and prey availability were key climate hazards, with species such as shy albatross, Australian fur seals, southern rockhopper penguins, and Australian sea lions facing

FURTHER STUDY OF CONTRACAECUM PELAGICUM (NEMATODA: ANISAKIDAE) IN SPHENISCUS MAGELLANICUS (AVES: SPHENISCIDAE) FROM ARGENTINEAN COASTS

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology, 2007
The anisakid species Contracaecum pelagicum Johnston and Mawson, 1942, is reported for first time at 2 different sites on the Argentine coast (Peninsula Valdés, 42 degrees 04'S, 63 degrees 38'W and Mar del Plata, 38 degrees 05'S, 57 degrees 38'W), parasitizing the Magellanic penguin, Spheniscus magellanicus Foster.

Late Holocene hunting economies in coastal southeastern Australia: Insights from the archaeological fauna of Curracurrang 1 Rockshelter, Royal National Park

open access: yesArchaeology in Oceania, Volume 59, Issue 2, Page 350-381, July 2024.
ABSTRACT Curracurrang 1 (1CU5) is a rockshelter site located in the Royal National Park (RNP) on the coast south of Sydney. Excavated from 1962 to 1966, the site's rich Holocene cultural deposit has become important for understanding regional Late Holocene developments in Australian lithic and shell technologies.

Taphonomic evaluation of penguin (Spheniscidae) remains at a shell-midden on the northern coast of Patagonia (San Matías Gulf, Río Negro, Argentina)

open access: yes, 2012
Archaeological deposits in continental Patagonia that allow an adequate discussion of the exploitation of seabirds, particularly the Spheniscidae, are scarce.

Calls of Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus contain individual signatures

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2024, Issue 5-6, May/June 2024.
Vocalisations are widely used to signal behavioural intention in animal communication, but may also carry acoustic signatures unique to the calling individual. Here, we used acoustic analysis to confirm that Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus calls carry individual signatures, and discerned which features made the calls individual.

Estimating egg mass-body mass relationships in birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The mass of a bird’s egg is a critical attribute of the species’ life history and represents a fundamental component of reproductive effort. Indeed, the tradeoff between the number of eggs in a clutch and clutch mass lies at the heart of understanding ...

A phylogeny of birds based on over 1,500 loci collected by target enrichment and high-throughput sequencing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Evolutionary relationships among birds in Neoaves, the clade comprising the vast majority of avian diversity, have vexed systematists due to the ancient, rapid radiation of numerous lineages.

Impacts of coprophagic foraging behaviour on the avian gut microbiome

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 99, Issue 2, Page 582-597, April 2024.
ABSTRACT Avian gut microbial communities are complex and play a fundamental role in regulating biological functions within an individual. Although it is well established that diet can influence the structure and composition of the gut microbiota, foraging behaviour may also play a critical, yet unexplored role in shaping the composition, dynamics, and ...
