The First eDNA‐Based Assessment at the World's Most Remote Inhabited Islands: Investigating Marine Vertebrate Diversity at Tristan da Cunha

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
This study employed eDNA to characterize marine vertebrate biodiversity at Tristan da Cunha, the world's most remote archipelago. The multi‐assay approach successfully detected 51 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) encompassing 24 families, 32 genera, and 13 species, resolving the islands characteristic diversity profile, and also identifying rare and ...

Acoustic cues to development of African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) begging calls

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 1, Page 286-294, January 2025.
Avian begging calls mediate parent–offspring conflict and direct parental care to genetically related progeny. We found that the fundamental frequency of begging calls of African Penguins Spheniscus demersus decreases as the penguins age and gain mass, before reaching a lower plateau when the chick reaches about 1 kg.

To slide or stride: when should Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) toboggan? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
We noted whether Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), when travelling over snow, walked or tobogganed according to gradient, snow friction, or snow penetrability. Both walking and tobogganing penguins reduced stride length and stride frequency, and thus

How does the shape of the wing and hindlimb bones of aquatic birds relate to their locomotor abilities?

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 307, Issue 12, Page 3801-3829, December 2024.
Abstract Aquatic birds represent diverse ecologies and locomotion types. Some became flightless or lost the ability for effective terrestrial locomotion, yet, certain species excel in water, on land, and in air, despite differing physical characteristics associated with each medium.
