What do we really know about the water repellency of feathers?

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2024, Issue 11-12, November/December 2024.
Feathers are complex integument structures that provide birds with many functions. They are vital to a bird's survival, fundamental to their visual displays, and responsible for the evolutionary radiation of the avian class. Feathers provide a protective barrier for the body; their water repellency is a key feature.

Population viability analysis predicts long‐term impacts of commercial Sooty Tern egg harvesting to a large breeding colony on a small oceanic island

open access: yesIbis, Volume 166, Issue 4, Page 1296-1310, October 2024.
The over‐exploitation of wild birds and the products derived from them can be a key threat driving changes in bird species richness and abundance. However, inadequate information on harvest levels combined with irregular population monitoring often means that the role of harvesting in population decline is difficult to quantify.

Patterns of energy acquisition by penguins: benefits of alternating short and long foraging trips. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In some seabirds, foraging trips have been defined as either long or short, with the length of time spent traveling to the foraging area apparently a critical feature in determining foraging trip length.

Latitudinal gradients and sex differences in morphology of the Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2024.
This study tests whether populations of Black Oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) across Alaska, the United States, and British Columbia, Canada, follow patterns of latitudinal gradients in morphology. Specifically, we test for patterns of Allen's and Bergmann's Rules, as well as differences in wing morphology based on migratory strategy.

Ecological aspects of helminth fauna of Magellanic penguins, Spheniscus magellanicus (aves: Spheniscidae), from the Northern Coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

open access: yesBrazilian journal of biology = Revista brasleira de biologia, 2013
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the helminth fauna found in the Magellanic penguin, Spheniscus magellanicus, relating parasite population and community ecological parameters to life aspects of the host species.

Eye morphology contributes to the ecology and evolution of the aquatic avifauna

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 9, Page 1262-1274, September 2024.
Aquatic birds are notable among the global avifauna for living in environments exposed to large amounts of light. Here, I show that eye size strongly predicts key aspects of aquatic bird ecology, including foraging behaviour, diet, height of aerial plunge dives, and depths of underwater pursuit dives. Abstract Aquatic birds are notable among the global

Economical genotyping of little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor) clades from feather-based DNA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Determination of clade membership is a crucial requirement for many research questions addressing phylogeography, population structure, mating patterns, speciation, and hybridisation.
