Die Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen der Pinguine untereinander konnten bisher weder durch morphologische noch durch chemische Merkmale befriedigend geklart werden. Als weiterer Merkmalskomplex wird die Komposition der Burzelwachse von 11 Pinguinarten mit zumindest jeweils einem Vertreter samtlicher rezenten Pinguingattungen herangezogen.

Blood sampling technique in penguins (Sphenisciformes)

The blood vessels in the flippers of members of the Sphenisciformes were studied with the aim of locating a suitable anatomical site for the collection of blood from this order. The optimal site was found to be the brachial vein on the ventral surface of the flipper. Blood samples were taken using this method from five different species.

Die groste Form ist der Kaiserpinguin mit 112–125 cm Korperhohe und 19–46 kg Gewicht. Der kleinste Vertreter ist der 35–45 cm grose und 0,5–2,1 kg schwere Zwergpinguin (del Hoyo et al. 1992).
