Breeding Partners Have Dissimilar Foraging Strategies in a Long‐Lived Arctic Seabird

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
In long‐lived species with biparental care, such as the thick‐billed murre, coordination of foraging strategies between mates may be crucial for raising offspring. This study found that breeding partners had dissimilar foraging behaviors, such as trip distance and dive numbers, compared to randomized pairs, yet they were more similar in wing length ...

The Adrenocortical Response to Stress in Incubating Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Auk, 1998
Circulating levels of glucocorticoids increase rapidly in response to capture and handling in many vertebrate species, which is indicative of the sensitivity of the hy- pothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis to a variety of acutely stressful events. We measured cir- culating levels of corticosterone at capture and after 25 min of handling and restraint in ...

Acoustic cues to development of African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) begging calls

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 1, Page 286-294, January 2025.
Avian begging calls mediate parent–offspring conflict and direct parental care to genetically related progeny. We found that the fundamental frequency of begging calls of African Penguins Spheniscus demersus decreases as the penguins age and gain mass, before reaching a lower plateau when the chick reaches about 1 kg.

ISOLAMENTO E IDENTIFICAÇÃO DE FUNGOS DO GÊNERO Aspergillus spp. DE ÁGUA UTILIZADA NA REABILITAÇÃO DE PINGUINS-DE-MAGALHÃES

Sex-specific spatial use of the winter foraging areas by Magellanic penguins and assessment of potential conflicts with fisheries during winter dispersal.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) disperse widely during winter and are a major consumer of marine resources over the Patagonian Shelf. Magellanic penguins were equipped with geolocators at Martillo Island in late February- early March 2017 ...

Tendance d’une colonie mixte de Manchots de Humboldt et de Manchots de Magellan dans le sud du Chili à la suite de l’établissement d’une aire protégée [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Worldwide marine protected areas (MPAs) have been designated to protect marine resources, including top predators such as seabirds. There is no conclusive information on whether protected areas can improve population trends of seabirds when these are ...

Restos de pingüinos del cenozoico medio de la Cordillera Patagónica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Middle Cenozoic marine fossil-bearing beds crop out in the Cerro Plataforma (western Chubut Province, Argentina) at about 1,400 m a.s.l. They are located 500 km far from the modern Atlantic coast and only 50 km from the Pacific Ocean.

Climate Change Impacts Pair‐Bond Dynamics in a Long‐Lived Monogamous Species

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 27, Issue 12, December 2024.
Climate change can influence populations by affecting mating processes. We examined the impact of climate on widowhood and divorce in a lmonogamous species, and the subsequent effects on individual vital rates and life‐history outcomes over 54 years in a population of snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) .

Heterophyid trematodes (Digenea) from penguins: A new species of Ascocotyle Looss, 1899, first description of metacercaria of Ascocotyle (A.) patagoniensis Hernández-Orts, Montero, Crespo, García, Raga and Aznar, 2012, and first molecular data

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2019
Two species of heterophyid trematodes were found in the Magellanic penguin, Spheniscus magellanicus (Forster), from Patagonia, Argentina. Ascocotyle (Ascocotyle) patagoniensis Hernández-Orts et al.

Behavioural evolution in penguins does not reflect phylogeny [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Over the past two decades, behavioural biologists and ecologists have made effective use of the comparative method, but have often stopped short of adopting an explicitly phylogenetic approach. We examined 68 behaviour and life history (BLH) traits of 15
