A duality between spheres and spheres with arcs [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 1970
The purpose of this paper is to extend the authors duality between nearly tame spheres and nearly tame arcs to a duality between wild spheres and tame spheres with nearly tame arcs properly attached, one arc for each wild point of the wild sphere.

Ion channel function of polycystin‐2/polycystin‐1 heteromer revealed by structure‐guided mutagenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in polycystin‐1 (PC1) or polycystin‐2 (PC2) cause autosomal‐dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We generated a novel gain‐of‐function PC2/PC1 heteromeric ion channel by mutating pore‐blocking residues. Moreover, we demonstrated that PC2 will preferentially assemble with PC1 to form heteromeric complexes when PC1 is co‐expressed ...

Deep Learning Improves Reconstruction of Ocean Vertical Velocity

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Ocean vertical velocity (w) plays a key role in regulating the exchanges of mass, heat and nutrients between the surface and deep ocean. However, direct observation remains difficult due to its small magnitude and large spatiotemporal variability ...

Seifert fibered homology spheres with trivial Heegaard Floer homology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
We show that among Seifert fibered integer homology spheres, Poincare sphere (with either orientation) is the only non-trivial example which has trivial Heegaard Floer homology. Together with an earlier result, this shows that if an integer homology sphere has trivial Heegaard Floer homology, then it is a connected sum of a number of Poincare spheres ...

Sticky surface: sphere–sphere adhesion dynamics

open access: yesJournal of Biological Dynamics, 2014
We present a multi-scale model to study the attachment of spherical particles with a rigid core, coated with binding ligands and in equilibrium with the surrounding, quiescent fluid medium. This class of fluid-immersed adhesion is widespread in many natural and engineering settings.

Decoding the dual role of autophagy in cancer through transcriptional and epigenetic regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation controls autophagy, which exerts context‐dependent effects on cancer: Autophagy suppresses tumorigenesis by maintaining cellular homeostasis or promotes tumor progression by supporting survival under stress. In this “In a Nutshell” article, we explore the intricate mechanisms of the dual function of autophagy ...

Autophagy in cancer and protein conformational disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Autophagy plays a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including protein and organelle quality control, development, immunity, and metabolism. Hence, dysregulation or mutations in autophagy‐related genes have been implicated in a wide range of human diseases.

Rheology of suspensions of viscoelastic spheres: deformability as an effective volume fraction

open access: yes, 2018
We study suspensions of deformable (viscoelastic) spheres in a Newtonian solvent in plane Couette geometry, by means of direct numerical simulations. We find that in the limit of vanishing inertia the effective viscosity $\mu$ of the suspension increases

The Local-Global Principle for Integral Generalized Apollonian Sphere Packings [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Four mutually tangent spheres form two gaps. In each of these, one can inscribe in a unique way four mutually tangent spheres such that each one of these spheres is tangent to exactly three of the original spheres. Repeating the process gives rise to a generalized Apollonian sphere packing. These packings have remarkable properties.
