THE study of the sphincters of the colon, concerning which radiologists have contributed considerable data, is important from an anatomical, physiological, and pathological aspect. From an anatomic and histologic standpoint, according to findings which I have previously presented, the sphincters of the colon are as shown in Figure 1.

SUMMARYEvidence has been put forward in recent years that urinary continence depends on urethral length. There are theoretical objections to this hypothesis which are discussed.Nine dogs were investigated under anaesthesia. Six dogs were found to be continent when the urethra was divided at the bladder neck.

The Pharyngoesophageal Sphincter.
Archives of Internal Medicine, 1972The authors have based their book on 110 cadaver specimens, and they present the normal gross and histologic anatomy of the pharyngoesophageal region. The book is an attempt to define the exact location of the function of the cricopharyngeous (which, interestingly, was first described by Valsalva in 1717) which the authors preferred to call the ...

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 1996
Endosonographic examination of anal sphincters is difficult with water-filled balloon systems because they distort the anatomy of the sphincters. A noncompliant system with parallel walls is preferred, such as the plastic hard cone 1.7 cm in outer diameter (Fig. 1) for the 1850 rectal endoprobe of the B&K Medical System, model 3535, with 10 MHz crystal

The lower esophageal sphincter
Neurogastroenterology & Motility, 2011AbstractThe lower esophageal sphincters (LES) together with the crural diaphragm are the major antireflux barriers protecting the esophagus from reflux of gastric content. However, reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus is a normal phenomenon in healthy individuals occurring primarily during episodes of transient lower esophageal sphincter ...

Biliary-like pain alone, or associated with a transient increase in liver or pancreatic enzyme, may be the clinical manifestations of sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. Since it is not always possible to dissociate functional conditions from subtle structural changes, the term sphincter of Oddi dysfunction is used to define motility abnormalities caused by

Current Gastroenterology Reports, 2010
Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD) is a poorly-understood disorder, typically presenting as postcholecystectomy, "biliary-type," right-sided abdominal and/or chest wall pain. Most patients referred to specialist clinics for work-up of presumed SOD do not, in fact, have anything wrong with their bile ducts or biliary sphincter mechanisms.

Hypogastrinemia and Sphincter Incompetence
New England Journal of Medicine, 1973The human gastrointestinal tract is characterized by a sphincter mechanism at each junctional area. Although the function of these sphincters is not entirely clear, there is reasonable evidence that their major role is to prevent the regurgitation of luminal contents from one portion of the gastrointestinal tract to another.

Musculus Sphincter Urethrae (Urethral or External Sphincter)
2001The musculus sphincter urethrae (urethral or external sphincter) has been the subject of numerous studies into the anatomical bases of urine continence. However, we are still a long way off from an integrated description of its anatomy tallying with the physiology of urine continence.
