Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD) is a benign non-tumoral disorder of the major papilla. It occurs mainly after cholecystectomy but can also occur before surgery. Biliary pain and biliary colic are the most frequent symptoms although recurrent pancreatic pain or pancreatitis can also be presenting symptoms.

Stenosis of the Sphincter of Oddi [PDF]
IN recent years, surgeons who operate upon patients for biliary-tract disease have become increasingly aware of the significant role of obstruction of the common duct at the sphincter of Oddi. This has been particularly true in patients with recurrent biliary symptoms after a cholecystectomy. Recurrent attacks of severe pain in the right upper quadrant

In 1887, Ruggero Oddi, described the sphincter of Oddi (SO) (1). But until recently, problems related to sphincter of Oddi dysfunction were either poorly diagnosed or were treated empirically with surgery. The introduction of endoscopie retrograde examination of the biliary and pancreatic ducts provided an opportunity for evaluating the sphincter ...
