Consequences of experimental cortisol manipulations on the thermal biology of the checkered puffer (Sphoeroides testudineus) in laboratory and field environments

Journal of Thermal Biology, 2015
Anthropogenic climate change is altering temperature regimes for coastal marine fishes. However, given that temperature changes will not occur in isolation of other stressors, it is necessary to explore the potential consequences of stress on the thermal tolerances and preferences of tropical marine fish in order to understand the thresholds for ...

Glomeruli and renal tubules are restricted to the cranial kidney of the adult estuarine Sphoeroides testudineus

Journal of Fish Biology, 2003
The kidney of the pufferfish Sphoeroides testudineus, an abundant tropical euryhaline estuarine species of the western Atlantic Ocean found in southern Brazil (in salinities ranging from 0 to 34) has a large and laterally spread cranial red portion, and a very thin and pale caudal portion.

Food resource partitioning by the pufferfishes Sphoeroides spengleri and S. testudineus from Biscayne Bay, Florida

Marine Biology, 1978
Partitioning of the food resources by two coexisting pufferfishes (Sphoeroides spengleri and S. testudineus) from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA, was investigated. Gut contents from 453 bandtail and 339 checkered puffers were analyzed. The diets of both species consisted of a variety of benthic prey, but only crustaceans and molluscs were important prey ...

Ultrastructure of Triangulamyxa amazonica n. gen. and n. sp. (Myxozoa, Myxosporea), a parasite of the Amazonian freshwater fish, Sphoeroides testudineus (Teleostei, Tetrodontidae)

European Journal of Protistology, 2005
Abstract Triangulamyxa amazonica n. gen. and n. sp. (Myxozoa, Ortholineidae), found in the lumen of the intestine of the freshwater fish Sphoeroides testudineus, is described. The fish were collected from the Amazon River near the city of Algodoal, State of the Para, Brazil.

Estuarine pufferfishes (Sphoeroides testudineusandS. Greeleyi) submitted to sea water dilution during ebb tide: a field experiment

Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology, 2004
The pufferfishes Spheroides testudineus and S. greeleyi are very abundant in estuaries along the Brazilian coast, with S. greeleyi restricted to areas of higher salinity than S. testudineus. Their osmoregulatory behaviour was tested with the fish inside fixed cages in the estuary, forced to endure sea water dilution during ebb tide.

Growth of the checkered puffer Sphoeroides testudineus: postscript to papers by Target and Pauly Ingles [PDF]

open access: possibleICLARM Fishbyte, 1991
J. Ingles and D. Pauly presented at the Fourth International Coral Reef Symposium a seasonally oscillating growth curve for the puffer Sphoeroides testudineus (Tetraodontidae), based on length-frequency data collected in 1974 in Florida by T.E. Targett, but forgot to include the corresponding growth parameters in the ensuing publication.

Length-weight relationship and parameters of growth for the checkered pufferSphoeroides testudineusfrom a karstic tropical coastal lagoon: La Carbonera, Yucatan, Mexico

Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 2012
Summary This study reports length–weight relationships and growth parameters for Sphoeorides testudineus from La Carbonera, a karstic tropical coastal lagoon on the northwestern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. A total of 461 specimens were collected between April 2009 and March 2010. The length–weight relationship was W = 0.061Lt2.98.

Redescription of the male and first description of the female ofCapillaria carioca Freitas et Lent, 1935 (Nematoda: Capillariidae), a parasite of the marine fishSphoeroides testudineus

Parasitology Research, 1995
A redescription of the male and the first description of the female of the intestinal nematode Capillaria carioca Freitas et Lent, 1935 are presented on the basis of specimens collected from the type host, the marine fish Sphoeroides testudineus (Linnaeus) (Teleostei, Tetraodontoidei), from the Lagoon of Yucalpetén in the northern coast of Yucatan ...
