Multiple origins of subsociality in crab spiders (Thomisidae)

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2015
Determining factors that facilitate the transition from a solitary to a social lifestyle is a major challenge in evolutionary biology, especially in taxa that are usually aggressive towards conspecifics. Most spiders live solitarily and few species are known to be social.

Behaviour of Spider Crabs in the Presence of Octopuses

Nature, 1953
AT La Rocque, in Jersey, the spring tides go out about two miles leaving many large lagoons with sandy bottoms and depths of from two to four feet of water. Here we often spear flat-fish, plaice, soles, etc., sometimes getting as many as twenty in a tide; here also may be found spider crabs (Maia squinado), which are often taken in Jersey for food, but

THE BIOLOGY OF MANX SPIDER CRABS

Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1963
The biology of the fourteen species of spider crabs occurring in the Isle of Man area was investigated, particular attention being given to their distribution, food, moulting cycle and breeding. The distribution of a species is related to the type of bottom deposit, and members of a genus have complementary distributions.

Penetration of the oocyte envelope by spermatozoa in the spider crab

Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1971
The oocyte of the spider crab Libinia emarginata possesses a two-layered envelope. This forms in the ovary between the oocyte and its surrounding follicle cells. Eggs collected at oviposition as they leave the body of the females have several sperms penetrating this envelope. Penetration apparently is the result of lysis by acrosomal materials.
