Abstract Fertile spikelet number per spike (FSN) and grain number per fertile spikelet (GNFS) contribute greatly to wheat yield improvement. To detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with FSN and GNFS, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the cross of Zhongkemai 13F10 and Chuanmai 42 was employed across eight ...

Pedicellate Spikelet Fertility in Big Bluestem from Eastern South Dakota [PDF]
Within a nursery of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Wt.) from seed collections made in eastern South Dakota, 86% of the plants possessed fertile pedicellate spikelets. From 10 random culms of 462 plants representing 20 different collecetion sites, seed-bearing sessile and pedicellate spikelets were separated and weigbed.

Effect of elevated CO2 and high temperature on seed-set and grain quality of rice [PDF]
Hybrid vigour may help overcome the negative effects of climate change in rice. A popular rice hybrid (IR75217H), a heat-tolerant check (N22), and a mega-variety (IR64) were tested for tolerance of seed-set and grain quality to high-temperature stress at

Rice occupies a premier place in Indian agriculture and plays a major role in Indian economy, being the staple food of two third of the population. More than 90% of the world’s rice is grown and consumed in Asia, where 60% of the global populations live (

Interaction between row-type genes in barley controls meristem determinacy and reveals novel routes to improved grain [PDF]
Hordeum species develop a central spikelet flanked by two lateral spikelets at each inflorescence node. In 'two-rowed' spikes, the central spikelet alone is fertile and sets grain, while in 'six-rowed' spikes, lateral spikelets can also produce grain ...

Summary: Grain number and size determine grain yield in crops and are closely associated with spikelet fertility and grain filling in barley (Hordeum vulgare).

Impacts of climate change on rice production in Africa and causes of simulated yield changes [PDF]
This study is the first of its kind to quantify possible effects of climate change on rice production in Africa. We simulated impacts on rice in irrigated systems (dry season and wet season) and rainfed systems (upland and lowland).

Poor spikelet fertility under low temperature (LT) stress during anthesis limits the possibility of high yield potential in indica–japonica hybrid rice, leading to reduced stability of grain yield. However, the cause for it is still unclear.
