One hundred and fifty patients with meningocele, myelomeningocele and myeloencephalocele treated in the 7 years, 1960–66, have been reviewed. There were 24 meningoceles and 126 myelomeningoceles with a mortality of 4.2 per cent in the meningocele group and 57.9 per cent in the myelomeningocele group.

The abdominal aorta in spina bifida cystica
Clinical Radiology, 1978The features of abdominal aortography in a small group of severely affected children with spina bifida cystica and kyphosis are presented. The examination was done to spinal fusion as earlier surgical reports had indicated a close relationship between the aorta and the vertebral bodies forming the apex of the kyphosis.

Hand Function in Patients with Spina Bifida Cystica
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1986The Jebsen-Taylor hand function test was performed on 143 patients with myelomeningocele, 8-35 years of age. Compared with normal individuals, matched for sex and age, patients with myelomeningocele demonstrated impaired hand function. Thoracic level and high lumbar level patients exhibited poorer hand function than low lumbar and sacral level patients.

Early repair of myelomeningocele (spina bifida cystica)
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1972✓ Myelomeningocele was treated intensively in 104 children between 1950 and 1955, and a follow-up study made of 97 during 1968 and 1969. Surgical repair of the cystic mass was carried out in 71 of the 97, and was refused by parents in 26. Of the 71 surgical patients, 37 were alive in 1969, while all of the nonsurgical patients were dead.

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1969SUMMARYA population study of neural tube malformations in 100,000 births, carried out in South Wales, showed that the incidence is 8.1 per thousand births: 3.5 anencephaly, 4.1 spina bifida and encephalocele and 0.5 hydrocephalus per thousand births respectively.
