Computed Tomography of Spinal Fractures
Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, 1979Computed tomography (CT) has aided significantly in the diagnosis and management of spinal fractures. The examination is easy, relatively quick, and avoids potentially harmful manipulation. The diagnostic advantages of CT include precise anatomic delineation and indication of extent of fractures, assessment of spinal stenosis, and demonstration of ...

Traumatic spinal fractures typically occur in younger patients generally following a high-energy motor vehicle accidents or falls. In a poly-traumatized patient, the precise mechanism of a complex spinal injury may be difficult to elicit, but recognition of a fracture pattern may lead the radiologist to infer the likelihood of soft tissue and/or ...

MULTIPLE-LEVEL NON-CONTIGOUS SPINAL FRACTURES
The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1988Double-level noncontiguous spinal injury is a more common occurrence than generally appreciated. A large number of these patients have neurological injury. Because these injuries occur in patients who meet the criteria for categorization as multiple trauma patients, we feel that a complete radiographic survey of the spine must be accomplished in the ...

Spinal fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis
Rheumatology International, 2016The ankylosed spine is prone to fracture even after minor trauma due to its changed biomechanical properties. The two central features of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) that promote the pathological remodeling of the spine are inflammation and new bone formation.

Spinal cord injury, spinal fracture, and spinal stenosis in ankylosing spondylitis
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1982✓ The authors report a retrospective review of 105 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) diagnosed over a 6-year period in Tucson, Arizona. In the series, there were 13 patients with spinal fracture and eight with severe spinal cord injury. Two patients with central cord contusion had no demonstrable cervical spine fracture.

Several major goals should be attained in the ideal treatment of any spinal injury. Spinal alignment must be restored by appropriate means of reduction to retain normal spinal biomechanics. This allows early painless mobility, prevents or minimizes neurological deficits, provides stability at the injured site, and prevents progressive late-occurring ...

Entrapment of Bowel Within a Spinal Fracture
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1991Entrapment of bowel by fracture fragments is extremely rare. A case of entrapment of a loop of jejunum between two vertebral bodies in the lumbar spine is reported. The mechanism appeared to be a hyperextension force with a rotatory component.
