Scoliosis Surgery in a Patient With Advanced Friedreich's Ataxia—It Is Not Too Late

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Friedreich's ataxia is a multisystem disorder with scoliosis being the most common non‐neurological manifestation. While scoliosis surgery is typically performed in adolescent, ambulatory patients, few data exist on surgical outcomes in patients with advanced disease.

Instrumented intervertebral or posterolateral fusion in elderly patients Clinical results of a single center

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2011
Background Data on the clinical outcome after spinal fusion in the elderly patient are rare. To our knowledge there has been no clinical outcome assessment for instrumented spinal fusion in elderly patients comparing posterolateral fusion with ...

Topical use of tranexamic acid can effectively decrease hidden blood loss during posterior lumbar spinal fusion surgery

open access: yesMedicine, 2017
In spinal fusion surgery, total blood loss (TBL) is composed of visible blood loss from the surgical field and wound drainage, and hidden blood loss (HBL). Until now, no published studies exist reporting the effect of topical use of tranexamic acid (tTXA)

Decreased Serum 5‐HT: Clinical Correlates and Regulatory Role in NMJ of MG

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Although 5‐Hydroxytryptamine (5‐HT) indirectly stimulates muscle contraction and participates in regulating Acetylcholine receptor (AChR) cluster homeostasis in cellular, animal, and clinical studies, evidence regarding its potential to modulate muscle contraction in myasthenia gravis (MG) remains limited.

Postoperative low dose CT assessment of interbody fusion two years after thoracoscopic scoliosis surgery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The relationship between radiologic union and clinical outcomes in thoracoscopic scoliosis surgery is not clear, as apparent non-union of a spinal fusion does not always correspond to a poor clinical result.

Dynamic stabilization versus fusion for treatment of degenerative spine conditions. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Study design Comparative effectiveness review.Study rationale Spinal fusion is believed to accelerate the degeneration of the vertebral segment above or below the fusion site, a condition called adjacent segment disease (ASD).

Fatigue Performance of Additively Manufactured Ti‐6Al‐4V: Impact of Different Kinds of Porosities, Surface, and Heat Treatments in Laser Powder Bed Fusion Productivity Parameters

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ti‐6Al‐4V samples produced by laser‐powder bed fusion are tested for static and dynamic mechanical properties to systematically evaluate the effects of surface roughness and internal porosity when using productivity parameters. The most detrimental impact to fatigue is caused by surface roughness, lack of fusion and keyhole porosity in descending order.

Opioids Delay Healing of Spinal Fusion: A Rabbit Posterolateral Lumbar Fusion Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Context Opioid use is prevalent in the management of pre- and postoperative pain in patients undergoing spinal fusion. There is evidence that opioids downregulate osteoblasts in vitro, and a previous study found that morphine delays the ...
