Physiology of Spinal Cord, Nerve Root and Peripheral Nerve Compression

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1956
The reversible conduction block produced by maintained mechanical pressure around small segments of spinal cord, nerve root or peripheral nerve (dog) is due to mechanical deformation of the neuronal tissue and not to lack of O2. The compressed segment, although ischemic, is not anoxic; O2 from adjacent nonischemic tissue reaches it, presumably by ...

Spinal Dural Sac, Nerve Root Cuffs, Rootlets, and Nerve Roots

2014
Nerve rootlets leave the spinal cord at the anterolateral and posterolateral sulci. Anterior rootlets contain predominantly efferent fibers from the anterior horn and carry motor signals to voluntary muscles. At thoracic and upper lumbar regions, they also carry preganglionic sympathetic fibers from the lateral horns.

Nerve Roots and Spinal Nerves in Degenerative Disk Disease

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1977
After 43 years of investigating the intervertebral disk, the long term results of the management of patients from the standpoint of pain are not significantly different than they were prior to the identification of the herniated disk nor do they seem to be significantly different than no treatment at all. This should at least suggest that the phenomena

[Incarceration of spinal nerve roots].

Ugeskrift for laeger, 1997
The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognosis of motor function in patients that experience the combination of a sudden disappearance of radicular pain and severe motor paresis. Eight patients were identified over a ten year period. Operative decompression of the affected lumbar root with removal of a disc prolapse seems to have a good prognosis ...
