The relationship between segmental kinematics and ball spin in Type-2 cricket spin bowling
Journal of Sports Sciences, 2017The techniques of spin bowling in cricket have been largely formulated from the collective intuitions of past players. A standard model of bowling technique has been generally prescribed for both off-spin and leg-spin bowlers, but there has been no biomechanics research to validate this approach. This study measured 20 Type-2 off-spin and 15 Type-2 leg-

Illegal bowling actions contribute to performance in cricket finger‐spin bowlers
Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, 2018With advances in technology, scientists are now able to more accurately measure elbow displacement changes during the cricket bowling action. This has led to the realization that the majority of bowlers undergo some degree of elbow extension during the forward swing phase of bowling.

Spin-bowling in cricket re-visited: model trajectories for various spin-vector angles
Physica Scripta, 2016In this paper we investigate, via the calculation of model trajectories appropriate to slow bowling in cricket, the effects on the flight path of the ball before pitching due to changes in the angle of the spin-vector. This was accomplished by allowing the spin-vector to vary in three ways.

Bowling machine delivers new spin on cricket
Physics World, 2006When England's cricketers take on Australia in the Ashes later this month, they can expect to face a variety of hostile bowling, from the tricky spin of Shane Warne to the speed and accuracy of Glenn McGrath. To succeed against such deliveries requires huge amounts of practice, which is why a bowling machine developed by researchers at Loughborough ...

Pelvic and trunk mechanics and injury in cricket: A spin bowling case study
International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching, 2016An international cricket spin bowler was experiencing asymmetrical low back pain while bowling his off-break delivery. The aim of this study was to identify technical discrepancies between the bowler’s off-break delivery and his other variations, which did not cause low back pain.

Delivering a cricket ball with a wrist-spin (WS) bowling technique is considered one of the game's most difficult skills. Limited biomechanical information exists for WS bowlers across skill levels. The purpose of this study was to compare biomechanical, isokinetic strength and anthropometric measures between elite (12) and pathway bowlers (eight ...

Identification of key performance parameters during off-spin bowling with a smart cricket ball
Sports Technology, 2011A smart cricket ball, instrumented with three high-speed MEMS gyroscopes, was used to measure performance parameters during off-spin bowling. The average spin rate and finger torque generated by the bowler were 22.7 rps and 0.28 N·m, respectively. The arm motion could be clearly identified on the spin-axis vector diagram. The spin-axis vector described

Factors affecting performance in elite finger-spin bowling
2019Full-body three-dimensional kinematics, passive joint range of motion and bowling parameters from match play were calculated to enable the analysis of elite finger spin bowling technique and delivery mechanics. Specifically, the effect of kinematic parameters and passive joint range of motion contributing to the production of spin were examined whilst ...
