Spinning Contingency Reserve: Economic Value and Demand Functions

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2008
Spinning contingency reserve is idle capacity connected to the system to ensure reliable operations in the case of equipment outages. The reserve has an economic value since it reduces the outage costs. In several electricity markets, reserve demand functions have been implemented to take into account the value of reserve in the market clearing process.

Economic Spinning Reserve Power by Controlled Preheater Activation

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1992
Abstract In this paper a new control method for the economic providing of spinning reserve power is presented. The behaviour and efficiency of the control concept at realistic disturbances in an electrical power system are described as well as the reactions to the power system behaviour, in the case that all primary controlled steam power plants will

Optimal Bidding Strategy in Spinning Reserve Market

Electric Power Components and Systems, 2001
In this paper, the problem of building the optimal bidding strategies for competitive suppliers in the California-type spinning reserve market is addressed. In this market, each supplier is required to submit a capacity bid and an energy bid simultaneously, and selection of spinning reserve suppliers is solely based on the capacity bids and the ...

Optimal scheduling of spinning reserve with ramp constraints

IEEE Power Engineering Society. 1999 Winter Meeting (Cat. No.99CH36233), 1999
This paper proposes an effective method to schedule spinning reserve optimally. It initially employs Lagrangian relaxation technique to obtain the commitment schedule by relaxing the demand constraint, spinning reserve constraint and every unit ramp rate constraint.

Fast demand response as spinning reserve in microgrids

Mediterranean Conference on Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Energy Conversion (MedPower 2016), 2016
Paper presents Fast Demand Response (DR) as readily available (i.e. sub-second) spinning reserve. As such it contributes to overall power system reserve and consequently increases renewable energy (RE) penetration. Paper outlines an implementation of Fast DR and presents measurements from a real isolated power system in Australia.

A methodology for management of spinning reserve requirements

IEEE Power Engineering Society. 1999 Winter Meeting (Cat. No.99CH36233), 1999
This paper describes a methodology for management of spinning reserves involving, on the one hand, determination of system reserve requirements, and, on the other, determination of the availability of such reserves at any dispatch condition. Three types of reserves are maintained: primary reserves, intended to arrest the initial fall in frequencies ...

Economic generation dispatch with responsive spinning reserve constraints

Conference Proceedings Power Industry Computer Application Conference, 1993
The economic reallocation of generation resources to minimize production costs, while maintaining a margin of responsive reserve, is presented. Responsive reserve on units is defined at Houston Lighting & Power Company (HL&P) to be the minimum of (1) 20% of a unit's high capability limit or (2) the difference between its actual production and the same ...

Spinning reserve service pricing in hydroelectric power plants

2004 IEEE/PES Transmision and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (IEEE Cat. No. 04EX956), 2005
In the last few years, the electric sector has been going through the unbundling process of several participating agents and to the creation of a responsible market for all the occurring transactions. One of the services of great importance within this new electric sector is that pertaining to the services that contribute to the security, reliability ...

Joint Energy and Spinning Reserve Dispatching and Pricing

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2000
Abstract Unpredictable load demand variations and also sudden generation interruption may cause imbalance in power systems. To prevent any blackout and to reduce such total power imbalance, spinning reserve can provide electric power system ability to respond.

Spinning Reserve Constrained Static and Dynamic Economic Dispatch

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1982
One of the recurring problems facing energy control center dispatchers each day is how to operate the system during the periods of high load pickup, such that there is sufflcient generation to follow the load pickup, while still maintaining reasonable reserve and/or regulation margin.
