YlmG1 is localized exclusively to the chloroplast envelope membrane and is involved in preprotein translocation in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cytosolically synthesized chloroplast preproteins are translocated across the outer and inner envelope membranes through translocons called TOC and TIC, respectively. In green algae and plants, the TIC core is composed of essential membrane proteins, Tic12, Tic20, and Tic214.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Thermal performance of radiant floor cooling with phase change material for energy-efficient buildings

open access: yesOpen Engineering
In this article, we propose a novel radiant floor cooling system employing phase change materials (PCMs) with the applicability of a thermal energy simulation (TES) using two different TESs (spiral and counter). The numerical simulation was done with the

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Drawing a spiral of square roots

open access: yes, 2017
Pythagoras theorem has been a perennially interesting topic among mathematicians – both young and old. In this investigation, we will create a spiral of sequential square roots using Pythagoras theorem and will explore several related exciting patterns ...

The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

Guiding AlphaFold to predict how Munc13‐1 opens Syntaxin‐1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The syntaxin‐1 Habc‐domain (orange), linker (pink) and SNARE motif (yellow) form a closed conformation that binds to Munc18‐1 (violet) and is opened by the Munc13‐1 MUN domain (cyan) to form the SNARE complex that triggers neurotransmitter release.

Spiral-scan atomic force microscopy: a constant linear velocity approach

open access: yes
This paper describes an alternative method to the widely-used raster-scan technique for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). In this method, the sample is scanned in a spiral pattern instead of the well established raster trajectory.

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Some statistical properties of spiral galaxies

open access: yes, 1999
This paper presents some statistical correlations of 72 northern spiral galaxies. The results show that early-type spirals that are brighter, and thicker, and the axis ratios (H-z/H-r) of the disk tend to be smaller along the Hubble sequence.
