Towards a more realistic population of bright spiral galaxies in cosmological simulations [PDF]
We present an update to the multiphase SPH galaxy formation code by Scannapieco et al. We include a more elaborate treatment of the production of metals, cooling rates based on individual element abundances, and a scheme for the turbulent diffusion of ...

ABSTRACT Planetary nebulae represent a late evolutionary phase of low‐ to intermediate‐mass stars. In this article, we present the serendipitous discovery of a previously unknown, faint potential Galactic planetary nebula (PN) in the constellation Camelopardalis, identified during a survey‐inspection, aiming at the detection of dwarf companions of the ...

THE DISCOVERY OF SEVEN EXTREMELY LOW SURFACE BRIGHTNESS GALAXIES IN THE FIELD OF THE NEARBY SPIRAL GALAXY M101 [PDF]
Dwarf satellite galaxies are a key probe of dark matter and of galaxy formation on small scales and of the dark matter halo masses of their central galaxies.

Dark Matter in Spiral Galaxies [PDF]
In this review I will concentrate on three questions concerning the issue of dark matter in spiral galaxies. In the first place (and for the most part) I will discuss the analysis of rotation curves and the question whether the “maximum–disk hypothesis” is valid.

Simulations of dual morphology in spiral galaxies [PDF]
Gas and stars in spiral galaxies are modelled with the DUAL code, using hydrodynamic and N-body techniques. The simulations reveal morphological differences mirroring the dual morphologies seen in B and K' band observations of many spiral galaxies.

Color Differences between Clockwise and Counterclockwise Spiral Galaxies [PDF]
While spiral galaxies observed from Earth clearly seem to spin in different directions, little is yet known about other differences between galaxies that spin clockwise and galaxies that spin counterclockwise.

The Curious Case of CysE: Diversity and Distribution of Serine Acetyltransferases in Bacteria
ABSTRACT Serine acetyltransferase (CysE) is a member of the left‐handed β‐helix family of acetyltransferases that catalyze the rate limiting step in de novo cysteine biosynthesis. There are two isoforms of CysE that differ in length, with the shorter isoform lacking approximately 76 amino acids at the N‐terminus of the protein from the serine ...

We develop a new technique to equip models of spiral galaxies with self-consistent dynamics that match observations. We apply our technique and construct a model for the Milky Way with a dynamical interstellar medium (ISM). In simulations a four-arm spiral structure emerges from this model that is similar to the one observed in the Milky Way's ISM ...

The Universal Rotation Curve of Spiral Galaxies: I. the Dark Matter Connection [PDF]
We use a homogeneous sample of about 1100 optical and radio rotation curves (RCs) and relative surface photometry to investigate the main mass structure properties of spirals, over a range of 6 magnitudes and out to 1.5 and 2 optical radii (for the ...
