ON THE FRACTION OF BARRED SPIRAL GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2010
We investigate the stellar masses of strongly barred spiral galaxies. Our analysis is based on a sample of ~14000 visually-classified nearby galaxies given in Nair & Abraham 2010(a). The fraction of barred spiral galaxies is found to be a strong function of stellar mass and star formation history, with a minimum near the characteristic mass at ...

The Identification of a Dusty Multiarm Spiral Galaxy at z = 3.06 with JWST and ALMA

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2022
Spiral arms serve crucial purposes in star formation and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we report the identification of “A2744-DSG- z 3,” a dusty, multiarm spiral galaxy at z = 3.059 using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS imaging and grism ...

Gas velocity patterns in simulated galaxies: Observational diagnostics of spiral structure theories [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
There are two theories of stellar spiral arms in isolated disc galaxies that model stellar spiral arms with different longevities: quasi-stationary density wave theory, which characterises spirals as rigidly rotating, long-lived patterns (i.e. steady spirals), and dynamic spiral theory, which characterises spirals as differentially rotating, transient,

The collective origin of spiral structures in disk galaxies

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
After almost fifty years the origin of spiral arms in disk galaxies remains one of the major unsolved problems in astrophysics. Recent attempts have indicated that substructures in the dark matter halos of galaxies could induce spiral patterns in disks ...

Radial distributions of arm-gas offsets as an observational test of spiral theories [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Theories of stellar spiral arms in disk galaxies can be grouped into two classes based on the longevity of a spiral arm. Although the quasi-stationary density wave theory supposes that spirals are rigidly-rotating, long-lived patterns, the dynamic spiral theory predicts that spirals are differentially-rotating, transient, recurrent patterns.

Scaling Relations of Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2007
We construct a large data set of global structural parameters for 1300 field and cluster spiral galaxies and explore the joint distribution of luminosity L, optical rotation velocity V, and disk size R at I- and 2MASS K-bands. The I- and K-band velocity-luminosity (VL) relations have log-slopes of 0.29 and 0.27, respectively with sigma_ln(VL)~0.13, and

JWST Reveals a Surprisingly High Fraction of Galaxies Being Spiral-like at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 4

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Spiral arms are one of the most important features used to classify the morphology of local galaxies. The cosmic epoch when spiral arms first appeared contains essential clues to the evolution of disk galaxies.

Mass and Color Dependence of the Hubble Spiral Sequence [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In the classic Hubble spiral sequence, arm windiness correlates with bulge size; Sa type spiral galaxies with larger bulges also have the most tightly wound spirals. Exceptions to this have long been known, and in recent work using Galaxy Zoo morphologies no strong correlation was seen in a volume limited sample.
