Vistas in Astronomy, 1986
Abstract This article aims to give an overview of the present state of knowledge about the disks of spiral galaxies obtained from a very large number of observations at various wavelengths. Theoretical ideas which are essential for an understanding of much of the observational material are sketched in sections 2 and 3.

Phenomenology of Spiral Galaxies
1975Galaxies have probably been formed from fluctuations in density and motion in the universe. Many cosmologists have suggested that the separation into individual units took place around the time of decoupling of matter and radiation, when the radius of the universe was about 1/1000th of the present radius.
