Staged ecologies: Aesthetics, nature and infrastructure in the late‐modern metropolis

open access: yesTransactions of the Institute of British Geographers, EarlyView.
Short Abstract This paper examines the relationship between urban nature and landscape design within a £1.5 billion regeneration project that is currently unfolding in Thamesmead, a town in south‐east London. It develops the notion of ‘staged ecologies’ to examine how urban nature is being spatially and aesthetically arranged across the town's ...

Aerial Track‐Guided Autonomous Soft Ring Robot

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 26, July 10, 2025.
Controlling motion paths in soft active material‐based robots is challenging due to their inherently high degrees of freedom. Inspired by aerial trams, a new class of autonomous, track‐guided soft robots composed of twisted liquid crystal elastomer rings are reported.

Genotyping by Amplicon Sequencing (GBAS) With Newly Developed SSR and EPIC Markers Reveals Structure in Populations of the Green Toad (Bufotes viridis) Across Rural and Urban Environments

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
We developed and tested SSR and EPIC markers for the green toad (Bufotes viridis), demonstrating their effectiveness using genotyping by high‐throughput amplicon sequencing (GBAS) across urban and rural populations. EPIC markers exhibited fewer null alleles and provided more ecologically coherent clustering results, while SSRs reflected drift‐induced ...

Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Cytisus scoparius*

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 7, Page 1877-1933, July 2025.
Broom is an attractive and common native plant across Britain, Ireland and most of Europe, and yet it is considered a harmful and invasive weed around the rest of the world. This is aided by broom thriving on poor dry soils, helped by using green stems for photosynthesis and having root nodules to fix nitrogen.

Capturing Extraction: Geology, Photography, Industry and Institutional History in the Bingley Archive

open access: yesBulletin of Latin American Research, Volume 44, Issue 3, Page 198-219, July 2025.
Godfrey Bingley was a British industrialist who took up geology, photography and travel in the 1880s. His photographs are housed at the University of Leeds, where he worked with its Chair of Geology. This article analyses the archive's projection of the imperial geological imaginary that emanated from Britain and extended to the Americas.

A Just Transition or a Downward Spiral? Land and Livelihood Transitions to and Away From Coal Mining in India

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, Volume 25, Issue 3, July 2025.
ABSTRACT When coal mines expand across Central and Eastern India, agrarian groups typically object strongly to displacement. Meanwhile, and often in the immediate vicinity of the expanding mines, the previously displaced now working in the coal economy protest against mine closures. Additional millions are situated somewhere between attempts to protect

Theoretical analysis of different feedback concepts for active vibration control of rotating machines with current‐controlled electrodynamic actuators between machine feet and steel frame foundation

open access: yesZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, Volume 105, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The paper presents a theoretical analysis of different feedback concepts for active vibration control of rotating machines with current‐controlled electrodynamic actuators between the machine feet and the steel frame foundation. A generalized mathematical formulation—based on a detailed formulation and on simplified formulations—has been ...

Plant mycorrhizal status indicates partner selectivity in arbuscular mycorrhizal interaction networks

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1358-1368, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Mycorrhizal symbiosis, specifically arbuscular mycorrhiza, is one of Earth's oldest and most widespread symbiosis. Existing evidence suggests that plant species differ in their associations with mycorrhizal partners, with different species reported to be always ...

A lifetime of experiences: Modelling habitat quality through cumulative effects on individual survival

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1173-1185, June 2025.
Abstract Variation in habitat quality affects individual fitness through the accumulation of benefits and costs over time. Although an individual's fitness and susceptibility to mortality are consequences of these past experiences, current analytical models do not quantify the cumulative effects of resources, risks, and environmental conditions on ...
