Spiral patterns, spiral breakup, and zigzag spirals in an optical device
Physical Review E, 2005Above the first lasing threshold the degenerate optical parametric oscillator with saturable absorber displays successive Hopf and Turing instabilities. Various spiral patterns and defect turbulent patterns are numerically observed on the light intensity profiles.

We present a new topology for high-speed ring networks: the spiral ring. We also describe a MAC-level protocol, called Distributed Spiral Multiple Access (DSMA), suitable for the spiral ring topology. The DSMA protocol is based on token passing and gives a fair and efficient network behaviour regardless of the transmission rate and network size.

We present a surprising modification of optical interferometry. A so-called spiral phase element in the beam path of a standard microscope results in an interferogram of phase samples, for which the interference fringes have the shape of spirals instead of closed contour lines as in traditional interferograms.

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1948Abstract An explanation is suggested of spiral growth in sporangiophores of Phycomyces in terms of wall structure. It is pointed out that the growth of the cell resembles the extension of a rather flat spiral spring loaded axially at one end. Like the cell, the spring rotates as it extends.
