As early as 1914 Levaditi and Marie1came to the conclusion, mainly as a result of experimental studies on rabbits, that there exist two distinct strains of the spirochete of Schaudinn, the dermotropic and the neurotropic varieties, characterized by affinity for the cutaneous tissue and for the nerve tissue, respectively.
