Spironolactone and warfarin interaction

Spironolactone has been reported to diminish the hypoprothrombinemic effect of oral anticoagulants in animals and digitoxin blood levels in man by induction of hepatic enzymes. To evaluate this in man, single oral doses of racemic warfarin, 1.5 mg/kg body weight, with and without 200 mg oral spironolactine daily, were administered to 9 normal subjects.

Spironolactone in the Treatment of Hirsutism

Spironolactone (100 mg) for 25 days in each menstrual cycle was assessed over 6 months for treatment of hirsutism in 35 patients. Five patients withdrew due to either nausea or polymenorrhea. the latter problem was encountered in 16 patients. of the 30 remaining patients, 17 had a significant reduction in hair growth as assessed by Ferriman and Gallwey

SINCE THE clinical introduction of spironolactone in 1957, there have been several reports of gynecomastia in men receiving this diuretic. These have appeared either as individual case reports or as an incidental single observation in a group of patients undergoing metabolic studies during treatment with spironolactone.
