This work aimed at collecting filariasis transmission data of Anopheles gambiae to be used in predicting future trends in filariasis transmission and control programme outcomes. Collection of the mosquitoes was made by human landing catch and light trap methods. In all, 5,813 females were caught from September 2005 to August 2006.

Incidental Finding of Dirofilaria immitis (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) Microfilariae in the Bone Marrow of a Dog with Mixed Leishmania infantum-Dirofilaria immitis Infection

We report a rare and interesting case of mixed infection with Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis associated with the incidental finding of microfilariae in the bone marrow of a 9-year-old, intact, male Bullmastiff which was seropositive to L. infantum.

Another tool in the toolbox: Aphid‐specific Wolbachia protect against fungal pathogens

Wolbachia infected more than 80% of Pentalonia aphids sampled across the Hawaiian Islands and other locations. The aphid‐specific M‐supergroup strains of this symbiont protected against a specialist fungal pathogen, Pandora, but not the generalist pathogen Beauveria or the parasitoid Aphidius colemanii.

First molecular identification of Haemonchus contortus (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae), a blood‐sucking gastric nematode of artiodactyles, in the ground beetle Carabus granulatus (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

Twenty‐six individuals of Carabus granulatus were screened for the presence of the DNA of pathogenic gastrointestinal nematodes of ruminants inhabiting the Białowieża Primeval Forest. In six insects, the presence of the DNA of blood‐sucking abomasal nematode, Haemonchus contortus was detected.
