Churning power loss of the intermediate gearbox in a helicopter under splash lubrication

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2021
Based on computational fluid dynamics, a two-phase flow model was established to calculate the churning power loss of the spiral bevel gears under splash lubrication. The error between the simulation results and experiment results is only 7.04%. Taking a certain helicopter as an example, the churning power loss of the intermediate gearbox is ∼2.6051 kW,

A novel passive filtration system for splash-lubricated gearboxes: Part 1

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2020
Splash-lubricated gearboxes are widely used in many industries. Contaminant removal systems are rarely employed in splash-lubricated gearboxes, such as some gearboxes are used in helicopters and mining machines. The maintenance of lubrication systems in those machines relies on periodic onsite inspection and lubricant change.

Experimental Investigations to Use Splash Lubrication for High-Speed Gears

Journal of Tribology, 2017
In order to use electric motors which run up to 40,000 rpm in future automotive applications, this study aims to experimentally investigate if splash lubrication technique is worth considering for high-speed gears, i.e., for tangential gear speed up to 60 m/s.

Prediction of Oil Flow inside Tractor Transmission for Splash Type Lubrication

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2019
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This study introduces a method to examine the flow path of the lubricant inside a transmission housing of a tractor. A typical gearbox has several loads bearing elements which are in relative sliding motion to each other which causes heat to be released.

Analysis of Flow Regimes and Associated Sources of Dissipation in Splash Lubricated Planetary Gear Sets

Journal of Tribology, 2021
Abstract Planetary gears are used in several applications given that they provide high reduction ratio in a compact size. Two kinds of lubrication are used in these applications: injection or splash lubrication. In case of splash lubrication, the authors already highlighted the importance of the centrifugal effects leading to the ...

Design and analysis of a passive filtration system for splash lubricated gearboxes

2020
Lubricants are used in many applications to reduce frictions between contacting surfaces. Machines with clean lubricants will be able to achieve a longer life cycle and better reliability. It is unavoidable that wear particles and environmental ingress will be generated continuously during machine operating time.

Research on characteristics of splash lubrication and power losses of reducer based on MPS method

Lubrication Science, 2023
AbstractThe distribution of lubricant flow field inside the two‐stage transmission reducer is very complicated during splash lubrication, which is difficult to be visually simulated and analysed using traditional finite element methods (FEM). There are many problems in model processing, algorithm selection, mesh division, and computational workload ...

Flow and Heat Transfer Simulation in a Splash Lubricated Bell 525 Accessory Gearbox

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 73rd Annual Forum and Technology Display, 2017
Operating temperatures in a drive system gearbox are impacted by multiple factors like mechanical power, operating environment, geometrical design and lubricant properties. Cooling and lubrication performance is critical to operation and durability.
