Parameterizing split ergativity in Mayan

Natural Language & Linguistic Theory, 2019
The purpose of this paper is to explain the variation of Case alignment in the accusative side of the ergative split of Kaqchikel, Chol and Q’anjob’al (Mayan). In particular, I will address contrastive alignments found in their accusative side. In the accusative side of Kaqchikel, the intransitive subject and the transitive subject alike are cross ...

A note on split ergativity in Burushaski

Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, 1982
In his pioneer work on the Burushaski language, Lorimer (1935a:64) noted the existence of what has been later described as an ergative construction: the subject of a transitive verb is in the ergative case (a special case, usually marked by the suffix-e) while the subject of inttransitive verbs, as well as the object of transitive verbs, are in the ...

Split ergativity based on nominal type

Lingua, 2014
This paper argues that split ergativity based on nominal type is a morphological phenomenon, not a syntactic one. We use three tests to identify the source of this type of split ergativity as morphological syncretism: (i) case agreement, (ii) syntactic ergativity, (iii) coordination.

Split ergativity and transitivity in Chol

Lingua, 2012
Abstract In this paper I examine two types of splits in the otherwise ergative-absolutive person marking system of Chol Mayan. First, Chol shows what is known as a “split-S” system: subjects of unergatives pattern as transitive subjects (ergative), while subjects of unaccusatives pattern as transitive objects (absolutive) ( Gutierrez Sanchez, 2004 ).

Split syntactic ergativity: toward an implicational hierarchy

STUF - Language Typology and Universals, 1994
Cet article discute des donnees provenant de dix langues qui presentent des constructions syntaxiques ergatives. Alors que des langues comme le dyirbal manifestant une ergativite syntaxique nette sont assez rares, celles pour lesquelles l'ergativite est partielle ou eclatee ne constituent pas un cas si exceptionnel.

Split Ergativity and Word Order in Ch'orti'

International Journal of American Linguistics, 1994
L'A. decrit les modeles generalement observes de l'ergativite/ergativite eclatee en relation avec la presentation du cas, du temps/aspect, du topic, du type d'information ancien vs. nouveau. Il examine ensuite la maniere dont se realisent ces modeles au niveau de l'ordre des mots dans des phrases transitives et intransitives en ch'orti' (langue maya du

Russian Adversity Impersonals and Split Ergativity

2013
Most of the numerous studies on Russian Adversity Impersonals (e.g. lodku uneslo vetrom) focus on the formal make-up of these constructions and/or on their semantics. This article aims at describing Russian Adversity Impersonals from a typological point of view by linking them with ergativity.

The Aspect-Case Typology Correlation: Perfectivity Triggering Split Ergativity

Folia Linguistica, 1996
Il existe une correlation interessante entre les realisations de l'aspect et l'ergativite typologique dans les langues qui presentent une ergativite eclatee : les proprietes ergatives (morphologiques et parfois syntaxiques) se manifestent seulement dans les temps du passe et du parfait ou dans l'aspect perfectif, par opposition au temps present ou le ...

The Structural Source of Split Ergativity and Ergative Case in Georgian

2017
AbstractOn the basis of the study of split ergativity in Georgian, this chapter defends a simple principle according to which the difference between a nominative and an ergative behaviour of the same language, and possibly across languages, consists in the capacity of the transitive subject to be theta-licensed, and by consequence case-licensed, in a ...

Morphological and phonological sources of split ergative agreement

Lingua, 2007
Abstract A prevalent assumption is that alternations between distinct paradigms of verbal agreement directly reflect the grammatical functions and/or case of the arguments with which the verb agrees. This proves to be too simplistic a view of case and agreement, as shown by the various case/agreement mismatches attested cross-linguistically, and by ...
