Middle Meatal Spacers for Synechiae Prevention Following Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

open access: yesLaryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology, Volume 11, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective To determine whether middle meatal spacers reduce postoperative synechiae following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and to compare the effectiveness of absorbable versus nonabsorbable spacer materials. Methods A PRISMA 2020‐guided systematic review and meta‐analysis was performed.

Divergent shifts in hydraulic versus carbon acquisition functional traits after wildfire in four Rocky Mountain tree species

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 4, Page 1100-1117, April 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Climate change has increased the frequency and severity of drought and large wildfire events across western North America. Despite the increasing concurrence of drought and wildfire events and the importance of forests as a global carbon sink, the impacts of fire on ...

Developing and Evaluating Aquatic Passive Sampling of Environmental DNA for Microbial Community Profiling

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has transformed biodiversity monitoring across taxa from bacteria to mammals, yet sample collection remains a major bottleneck. Passive sampling via adsorption and entrapment has emerged as a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional active filtration.

Comparative Multi‐Marker Environmental DNA Metabarcoding of Marine Metazoan Communities: Water vs. Sediment

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the metazoan biodiversity in the Southern Adriatic Sea using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. Sediment and adjacent water samples were collected from three sites (one pristine, two impacted by human activities) at three distances from the coast across two seasons.

Diversity and Dispersal of Fungi Along a Subtropical Land‐to‐Sea Continuum

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2026.
This study investigates the marine mycobiome by integrating cross‐habitat sampling with a long‐read amplicon sequencing approach. The results provide novel insights into the largely unexplored fungal diversity in coastal ecosystems and highlight the role of dispersal, evidenced by the detection of transported terrestrial fungal taxa.

Expression and Clinical Significance of the Long Non‐Coding RNA OIP5‐AS1 in Alcohol Use Disorder

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 4, April 2026.
Plasma OIP5‐AS1 is significantly elevated in alcohol use disorder. Higher OIP5‐AS1 expression is associated with lower body mass index and shows good diagnostic performance for distinguishing alcohol use disorder from healthy controls (AUC = 0.9091, sensitivity = 100%, specificity = 75%).
