Spontaneous Imbibition in Low Permeability Carbonates

Energy Sources, 2005
Spontaneous imbibition is important in oil recovery from fractured and low permeability tight gas reservoirs. Gas-water spontaneous imbibition experiments were conducted using low permeability heterogeneous limestone core plugs. The interfacial tension was changed by adding differing amounts of alcohol to water.

Estimation of Imbibition Capillary Pressure Curves from Spontaneous Imbibition Data

Energy & Fuels, 2009
A closed-form solution for calculating imbibition capillary pressure from experimental data has been derived on the basis of the assumption of a constant capillary diffusion coefficient combined with Corey functions for the relative permeability curves. The solution is almost similar to the capillary pressure correlation reported by Skjaeveland et al. (

Spontaneous imbibition in parallel layers of packed beads

The European Physical Journal E, 2017
The imbibition of a wetting fluid in a homogeneous porous medium follows the diffusion-like behavior described by Washburn. The impregnation of a two-layered porous medium by a wetting fluid due to capillary action has been previously described to have two fronts, one saturating the medium and the other, leading front, which propagates in finer pores ...

Analytical solution to spontaneous imbibition under vertical temperature gradient based on the theory of spontaneous imbibition dynamics

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2019
Abstract In this work, we have theoretically studied the imbibition process related to a block in a fractured carbonate reservoir under an assumed constant, vertical temperature gradient, GT. An analytical solution to an ordinary differential equation we developed has been obtained using a computer program, and the original Washburn law normally ...

In situ saturation development during spontaneous imbibition

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2002
The in situ saturation development for reservoir core plugs was monitored during spontaneous imbibition using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The images monitored the movement of the imbibition front and the saturation change across the front as a function of initial water saturation. At zero initial water saturation, the water-front exhibited a very

Spontaneous Imbibition and Imbibition Oil Recovery in Tight Rocks

2017
Advances in the development of unconventional resources have led to a surge in North American oil production. For example, tight oil production has pushed the U.S. crude supply to over 9% of world total production. Therefore, petrophysical characterization of such low-permeability rocks, has become increasingly important for petroleum engineers ...

On Barenblatt's Model of Spontaneous Countercurrent Imbibition

Transport in Porous Media, 2004
Water imbibition is a critical mechanism of secondary oil recovery from fractured reservoirs. Spontaneous imbibition also plays a significant role in storage of liquid waste by controlling the extent of rock invasion. In the present paper, we extend a model of countercurrent imbibition based on Barenblatt's theory of non-equilibrium two-phase flow by ...

Characterization of Wettability From Spontaneous Imbibition Measurements

Annual Technical Meeting, 1994
Abstract Of the many methods of characterizing wettability of a porous medium, the most commonly used are the Amott test and the USBM test. The Amott test does not discriminate adequately between systems that give high values of wettability index to water and are collectively described as very strongly water-wet ...

Solvent-enhanced Spontaneous Imbibition in Fractured Reservoirs

EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition incorporating SPE Europec, 2013
Abstract Oil recovery in fractured reservoirs by water flooding critically depends on the wetting properties of the matrix blocks between the fractures. The recovery from oil-wet reservoirs is small. In incompletely oil-wet systems, the presence of initial water may change the wettability characteristics so that imbibition and some oil ...
