Introduction to Sporadic Groups [PDF]

open access: yesSymmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications, 2011
This is an introduction to finite simple groups, in particular sporadic groups, intended for physicists. After a short review of group theory, we enumerate the $1+1+16=18$ families of finite simple groups, as an introduction to the sporadic groups. These are described next, in three levels of increasing complexity, plus the six isolated "pariah" groups.

New upper bounds on the spreads of the sporadic simple groups [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We give improved upper bounds on the exact spreads of many of the larger sporadic simple groups, in some cases improving on the best known upper bound by several orders of ...

Incidence and spectrum of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease variants with mixed phenotype and co-occurrence of PrPSc types: an updated classification [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Six subtypes of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with distinctive clinico-pathological features have been identified largely based on two types of the abnormal prion protein, PrPSc, and the methionine (M)/valine (V) polymorphic codon 129 of the prion ...

Sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma of the hypopharynx: A case report

open access: yesSaudi Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences, 2019
Burkitt's lymphoma is a rapidly growing, high-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has three distinct variants. Of these, sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma most frequently involves the gastrointestinal system, and the hypopharynx is a rare site of occurrence.

A two-stage genome-wide association study of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The cause of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is largely unknown, but genetic factors are thought to play a significant role in determining susceptibility to motor neuron degeneration.

Clinical Characteristics and Surgical Outcomes of Right Heart Myxoma and Its Comparison with Left Heart Myxoma: A Single-Center Retrospective Study

open access: yesAnatolian Journal of Cardiology, 2023
Background: Cardiac myxomas are commonly located in the left atrium but rarely affect the right side of the heart. We retrospectively analyzed 28 patients receiving surgical treatment for right heart myxomas at our center and aimed to summarize the ...

Epidemiology of cardiomyopathy – A Clinical and Genetic Study of Restrictive Cardiomyopathy: The EPOCH-R Study

open access: yesJournal of the Practice of Cardiovascular Sciences, 2017
Introduction: Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is characterized by diastolic dysfunction, biatrial enlargement, and normal or near-normal systolic function. RCM is the rarest kind among cardiomyopathies with a severe outcome.

Multiple recurrences in a nonfamilial cardiac myxoma

open access: yesResearch in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2021
Cardiac myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors, with an estimated incidence of 0.5 per million individuals annually. Although surgical resection is curative however, postoperative tumor recurrence has been reported, especially in familial and
