Clear-Air Turbulence and Sporadic E Activity
Science, 1968Pilots' reports of clear-air turbulence correlate inferentially with sporadic E activity observed by backscatter radar. A cursory survey was made of 19 reports of turbulence between 1 and 20 August 1964 over the western United States; all but three correlate with sporadic E patches.

It is estimated that intensity of the E region source of ionization at night is required to be 0.1 percent to 1 percent of the intensity during daytime to allow the formation of sporadic E at night. Possible sources are considered.

Equatorial Sporadic E and Plasma Instabilities
Nature Physical Science, 1972THE radio reflexions from the sporadic E region (Es) of the ionosphere show unique properties within a narrow range of latitudes over the magnetic equator. Matsushita1 pointed out that the latitudinal variations of the maximum frequency reflected from the Es region and the solar daily range of geomagnetic H component each show a sharp maximum within ...

Measurement of Sporadic E-Layer lonization
Nature, 1949THE usual measure of sporadic E-layer ionization is the so-called 'critical frequency', that is, the highest reflected frequency for this layer. While this definition is suitable for all other ionospheric layers, it is not sufficient for the sporadic E-layer (Es), because it consists of ionized clouds and has no homogeneous ionization.

Sporadic-E and atmospheric pressure waves
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1971Abstract It is shown that the phenomena of sporadic-E ionization, cold fronts and microbarometric activity are related. The method of superimposed epoch applied to sporadic-E parameters indicated that on the frontal days sporadic-E tends to occur more frequently and with higher critical frequency than for the 10 preceding and 10 following days.

Sporadic-E and the equatorial electrojet
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1964Abstract An analysis of characteristics of sporadic- E at Indian and American equatorial stations has been made for quiet and disturbed days during the year 1958. The analysis reveals certain differences between the two chains of stations which indicate a possible difference in the width of the equatorial electrojet at the two zones.
